Vega interests me. Based on what little I've seen, the Conviction comic, part of the leaked demo, and a couple of the developers' comments, I think he can add a new dynamic to the squad, but I tend to think that about most of the squadmates, new or old, human or alien. This is what I imagine ran through his head at the end of Conviction, right after Anderson told him what his true purpose on the Normandy was.
Guard Shepard. Guard Shepard. The woman blew up a relay, a mass fucking relay, and—no, it didn't matter what else. The relay was enough. 300 000 dead Batarians were enough. Anderson was barking mad if he thought one man could guard Shepard. Sure he had the bigger body mass, but there was a vid floating around the extranet of the illustrious, not-dead Commander Shepard head butting a full-grown Krogan, and even if the vid was faked, it was clearly something someone thought Shepard would have the ability to do. A Krogan. And, you know what, he felt the need to bring up the relay thing again, because he was pretty damn sure that was also outside the realm of possibility. Hell, he was also pretty damn sure death was supposed to be permanent and she'd allegedly broken that too. Guard Shepard. Honestly. How do you guard a vortex?
With a whole fleet and a shit ton of guns, that's how. Not one disillusioned soldier in the prisoner's own damn ship.
Was she sleeping? Did Commander-Fucking-Shepard, Saviour of the Citadel, Vanquisher of All Things that Got in Her Way sleep? She wasn't moving. Come to think of it, she was sitting awkwardly. That had to be uncomfortable, especially over a long period of time, but she wasn't making a sound either. It wasn't like she was chained in that particular position. Hey—chains! Heavy, massive chains with mass effect fields. That's how you guard Shepard. And you know, a whole fleet of ships and really big fucking guns.
Alright—that was sigh. Definitely. She was awake. And... just sitting there. Making absolutely no attempt to escape. What? She couldn't be intimidated by him. An honest to god Krogan. If she had no plans on escaping, did that mean she turned herself in? Then what the hell was he here for? Shepard wasn't going anywhere. Was he assigned to make the Alliance look good to the folks back home? Look at that Marine. See his muscles? We've got that boogeywoman completely at our mercy. Don't worry. We're pretty sure that was just someone dressed as a Krogan. If so, the folks back home were morons.
This—this was why he ended up in Omega in the first place. Big, grand, useless gestures—that's what the Alliance had become, and this assignment was the epitome of grand, useless gestures.
Still... Shepard had been around the galaxy: seen the sights, met the important people, blown a lot of shit up and so on. If anyone in this sad stellar system had interesting stories to tell, it'd be Shepard. Might as well find out about that head butting thing. After all, it couldn't hurt to ask...
And now to wait until March 6 for the actual game to prove my characterization wrong.
