Vanishing point

By: Song

Summary:There is a point where you can't see anymore... Kakashi's past it.

A/U: Short fic that I wrote in approximately half an hour between almost restarting the computer because it wouldn't play any music and getting caught in some fanfictions about Kakashi and Obito Ah, the joys of the ever downward spiral. Semi-Kakashi POV. Depression seems mostly hopeless from the inside. He needs to see a therapist.

If you look over any stretch mostly flat terrain, there is a point when one can see no more. This is the vanishing point. People, like the earth, have vanishing points. It's the point at which they can no longer see the future, and are stuck in a long forgotten past. Very few people make it here, for good reason to. Once you reach the vanishing point, there is no return. Many go insane seeing only what has been, their various failures and short comings. Others simply die, unable to eat, or breath, believing it has already been said and done, and that life essentials such as breathing are not meant to be constant. Hatake Kakashi is neither of these, and yet he is far past the vanishing point.

To reach the vanishing point, a generally traumatic event occurs. This can be anywhere from the bitter realization that a life long belief is a lie, to the death of loved one. Hatake Kakashi experienced both.

Some people, like his father went past the vanishing point too. Sakumo felt the scorn for choosing the well being of his team over the mission. Perhaps it runs in families. The same thing happened to all the Uchiha after all.

Neither scenario ended well.

For people like Kakashi, who have long since passed the vanishing point, there is nothing. No future, no present, no hope, no dreams, only lies. Lies that say everything will be alright, the promise of a brighter tomorrow. To live for a lie is a sad existence, and yet he has lived there more than fifteen years.

Had Obito not died, Kakashi might not be beyond the horizon. But that's the vanishing point after all, what might have been.
