Hogan knew that the Washington she was returning to after spending her freshman year at UC Berkley was not the one she had left. Not only was the world as uncertain as ever since Gaza, but Hogan didn't know what to expect in her own life. For months she and her aunt had planned this summer. She has an internship at the White House, was staying at her aunt's, for once she would be treated as an adult. The summer could have been perfect, Hogan thought to herself. But two weeks ago her aunt had gotten the promotion of a lifetime, becoming the most influential women in the country. Hogan was genuinely happy and excited for her, but overnight she worried that the most influential women in her own life might not have time for her.
The ding of the fasten seat belt sign interrupted her thoughts. Meanwhile the pilot's voice resounded through the plane. "To give you an update on our location, we are thirty minutes due west from Washington. I am now turning on the fasten seat belt sign, as the FAA mandates that no one be about the cabin until we are at the gate. We thank you for your cooperation. We at United know that you have many carriers to choose from and we thank you for choosing to fly with us."
Thirty-six minutes later, she walked up the gangplank towards the terminal. The familiarity of home swept over her. Entering the brightly lite terminal of Regan National she glanced around knowing that either CJ or Simon could have bypassed the normal TSA security procedures to meet her at the gate. It took her a second, but she spotted Simon across the terminal. Even in casual clothes, his non-verbals screamed to the world Secret Service agent. She almost laughed, but instantaneously disappointment swept through her with the realization that her aunt's presence was lacking. Even though in her mind, Hogan knew that her aunt would have tried as hard as possible to meet her, her heart felt heavy. Simon spotted her, but didn't make any big effort to move towards her through the throngs of people. Instead he took off his sunglasses and his mouth broke out in a smile. Hogan couldn't help but force a smile in return, but Simon saw right through it. All it took was a moment but he had his arm around her and was whispering in her ear, " I know, but she tried Hogan. She really did."
Hogan dropped her backpack that had been slung over her shoulder and fell into his embrace. Wrapping both of her arms around him and burying herself within his chest. Simon awkwardly placed his other arm around her and after a moment he could hear her muffled voice. "I just," she paused, "I just haven't seen her in a really long time." He heard her take a deep breath and compose herself. She pulled back and let go. "Thank you for coming Uncle Simon."
"Wouldn't have miss it for the world, Kid. Let's go get your stuff." Together they set off towards baggage claim, and the world that awaited them. His arm wrapped around her shoulder, Hogan smiled as Simon said "Your aunt promised she would be home for dinner."
