Chapter 1: The Smiles On the Street Corner
"I'm…. I'm pregnant. You're the father." These words, uttered so simply, so directly, could not have had a more powerful effect than the end of the world… Or the beginning. And this was, in fact, a beginning. The beginning of everything the two partners had wished they had started ages ago. The beginning of two tortured souls overcoming all of their pain and starting anew. Seeley Booth and Temperance Brennan were no longer holding back. There would be no more running to far away lands to be elbow deep in remains or falling into the arms of a pretty blonde. This explosion of joy had finally pushed the two together. These words, pushing through the apprehension like a knife, had tied the two together in a way that was so powerful, neither could speak. Words were not necessary here. All that was needed were the smiles of triumph. Temperance Brennan was not one to feel classic human emotions. But the dazzling grin across Booth's face made her doubt her rationality. That one second of hesitation overrode all of her questions and self-worry. There was so much to be discussed, so many classic arguments that were the trademark of the couple yet to come. But here and now, on this dimly lit street corner, they had each other. That was all that they needed.
