The Hidden Door
By Nathalie Spina
Julietta went out onto the balcony in her home in Turin, Italy. She wore her newly made robe, made out of the finest silk money could buy. Julietta also wore her fluffy cotton slippers that the most beautiful zig-zag designs. She was admiring the beautiful view as her lover saw her on the balcony and came out to greet her. Julietta could not stop looking out at the beautiful city of Turin, the smells of the city enticed her to go to the new spice market down the cobblestoned street. She wanted to see all the new clothes that she had just sewn, in the store that she worked in. She didn't know much English so when she went to work, her lover, who was American, had to go to work with her and translate to all the tourists. It was a difficult job for Julietta but she stilled loved her work and loved to sew all the beautiful clothes out of all the fine silk.
"Il mio amor, how are you this fine morning?" Marcell asked Julietta. Julietta did not pay attention to what Marcell had said. She was too busy looking out over the city of Turin. She had seen something that caught her eye. It was a shimmering cement block that was paved into the cobblestone walls. It had a shimmering gleam that was so magical that she could feel her heart start to beat and her hands start to get clammy. She was nervous that if she told Marcell he would laugh at her and say that it was all in her head. But a piece of her told her that he would not laugh and help her on her quest to find that shimmering block of cement and she did not want Marcell on her journey, for she was worried that he would get hurt. Julietta could not live with herself if she had lost Marcell. She was determined to find out about that sparkling wonder, on her own.
Julietta fled to the front door and yelled to Marcell, "I don't know when I will return but I will come back to you, my love." She ran to where she saw the cement. Julietta ran through the streets. She pushed and shoved people out of her way without looking back. She yelled, "GET OUT OF THE WAY. I NEED TO SEE THE BLOCK!" over and over again until she almost lost her voice. When Julietta finally got to where she saw the shimmering stone, she took out her headband and started to dig through all the rubble. She didn't want to get her fingers dirty because she just got her fingers dipped for work. Julietta had to dip her fingers in this special acidic liquid that hurt like the devil whenever you dip your fingers in the liquid. The reason why she had to dip her fingers in it is because when she sews her fingers get too soft and if they get to soft, you can prick your fingers very easily. This liquid makes your finger tips hard and it helps when she sews so she doesn't get pricked as much.
When she finally reached to the end of the wall, she felt something soft. It was very plush and when she felt it she pulled back. She wasn't sure if it was something she should touch. But then she realized that she probably wouldn't be going to work after this adventure and took off her headband and started to dig for something hard. Julietta knew that there would be something hard at the end of this soft material. She started digging and digging and digging until she fell into the wall, into a weird dimension that had all sorts of tie-dyed colors with sequins and bow ties. She saw memories from before and saw people she hadn't seen in years. She began screaming.
"!" CRASH!
Julietta hit the floor with great force, but was somehow able to get back up with ease. As she got her footing, she held her head and looked around. She couldn't believe what she saw...
