Thunderstorms

Six-year-old Gabriela Dawson hugged her favourite stuffed dog as tight as she could as she listened to the thunderstorm outside. Cowering under her pink blanket she crawled to the end of her bed and scampered towards the door and out into the dark hallway.

Hearing the thunder strike again she raced to the nearest room; her brothers and shut the door. "Antonio!" She ran towards his bed and climbed up.

"Gabby," Seven-year-old Antonio sat up still half asleep. "Are you scared?" He reached over and turned on the lamp on his bedside table.

"Loggy and I can't sleep; can we stay with you?" She hugged her favourite stuffed dog tightly.

Antonio pulled back the covers allowing his younger sister to crawl underneath, "You know the thunder giants are just practicing bowling right?" He leaned on his side.

"I know." Gabby copied her brother's pose, "I just wish it wasn't so loud. It scares me and Loggy," She covered her ears as the thunder struck again.

"Well," Antonio yawned, "Bowling's a loud sport. You remember what Mom always says?"

"Yeah when he get scared make up names for the giants. Do you want to go sleep with Mommy and Daddy?" She sat up.

"No, no stay here;" Antonio pulled the covers back up around her, "Daddy just got off a double shift;"

"Okay Antonio."

"I'm going to call one monster Pinkytoes,"

Gabby giggled, "That's funny."

"Yeah and Pinkytoes is playing poepoehead in the final bowling game,"

Gabriela became less scared as she became invested in her brother's story, "Pinkytoes is gonna be pink and have a tutu," She decided, "She's a she."

"Okay then; that means Poepoehead is a boy, he's my favourite to win."

"That was Pinkytoes," Gabby said as she heard more thunder, "She got a strike now she's winning."

"Well," Antonio said after the next thunder clap, "That was Poepoehead and he he got a strike too, now they're both tied."

"Antonio?"

"Yeah Gabby?"

"I'm tired. Can we finish the game in the morning?"

"Sure Gabby," Antonio agreed, "Lets get some sleep." He reached over and turned off the light.

"I love you Antonio," Gabby snuggled closer to her older brother, "You're the best big brother ever."

"I love you too Gabby; you're the best little sister ever."
