Dancing On The Wind

Saying Goodbye

Wendy Sighed as she watched the couples dance their bodies swaying and twirling in time with the music. The soft music, twining between the colourful and happy dancer's reaching Wendy where it was absorbed into her body. She glanced away and sighed again as painful memories resurfaced. She had once loved to dance, to release her body, twirl, glide and leap, free of everything and able to escape. But since she had returned she had danced only the once. For several seconds her mind had emptied her heart had soared but then she had remembered and it had hit her almost like a physical blow, causing her to collapse. Leaving her a small pitiful girl sobbing and struggling to catch he breath.

As when she danced she was unable to ignore the memories of the night when she had witnessed the fairy's dance. Then she too had danced in the wind her feet gliding over a dance floor of nothing more than the wind and moonlight.

And most of all it was especially hurtful to remember him.

They had danced together on the wind, Wendy and Peter. It was painful being reminded of the way he had held her, his strong arms resting on her waist as he had manoeuvred her above the tree-tops. Twirling her across the sky on their invisible stage, their only lights were the stars and the moon and below them shone the golden glow of the fairies as they too danced on the wind. Then as they were bathed in the silver light of the sky with the forest alight with the golden fire the fairies had created, Peter had kissed her.

The perfect moment lasted only seconds as Peter then pulled slowly away and took in Wendy's rosy cheeks and the new shine in her eyes. For some reason this made Peter feel uneasy. Even though the kiss had lasted only seconds Wendy felt different and knew that she would never be the same again. But looking into Peter's eyes she had seen his mischievous twinkle replaced by a mixture of emotions confusion, anger, pain, and regret, till the joy created by his action was almost gone and overwhelmed. But Wendy forgot all of this until much later. Or she had simply decided to conveniently forget what might hurt her.

Peter pulled Wendy into a fierce hug, his arm wrapped tightly around the small of her back and her head tucked gently under his chin, a perfect fit. With her head resting against his chest Wendy could hear his heartbeat, strong and steady, unfaltering in its rhythm and oddly reassuring. Unlike Wendy's own heartbeat as at that moment it was fluttering wildly almost like a small bird's wings beating frantically. As their embrace continued the silence grew stronger almost unbreakable and it was at that moment that Wendy and Peter both realized they were saying goodbye. For the feelings they provoked in one another had no place in Neverland.

Two days later Wendy and her brothers left Neverland and in their hearts they knew they would never return.
