If for Nothing Besides Heat and Blankets.
I sighed as Danny and I filed into his room. I was frozen. It had been a long walk from the library. It had started to snow while we were there and by the time our Freudian discussions at the library had come to a close it was a full on blizzard and the busses were not running. I glanced over at Danny. His nose and cheeks were bright pink from the cold wind outside. His earlocks were starting to come out and he looked gloriously disheveled. He glanced up at me before beginning to unbutton his black caftan. I watched as his long, thin, fingers worked on the buttons. Soon he was done and he took his coat in his hand and hung it up on the back of his door. I began to undo my coat as well and hung it up next to his. I quickly pulled a pair of sweatpants and a Brooklyn Dodgers shirt out of my bag. Danny looked down at his legs while slowly stroking an earlock, and I got undressed and redressed quickly.
"I'm freezing," Danny stated. I looked over at him and smiled.
"Me too, I feel like my fingers are going to fall off," I remarked as I looked down at my pink fingers. I sat down on my mattress in the corner of Danny's room. Danny peeked over, with a look of mild disappointment in his blue eyes.
"What?" I asked, as he pulled his pajamas from a drawer against the wall of his room. I looked away respectfully as he stripped down and reclothed himself.
"Nothing," he said. "It's just that we'll have to split the blankets and so you get less blankets now, and I'll be cold as well as you." He sat down on his bed. It was dark in the room, and the silver moonlight shone through the window illuminating Danny's face. It was also cold in his room and in the silver moonlight I could see him shivering. I looked down, only to notice that my own hands were shaking as well. I lifted my head and found Danny staring at me.
"Come into my bed, Reuven." Danny said gently. I could feel my stomach turn over.
"It's cold, let's share the heat and blankets. Reuven, just for the night," he said, staring straight into my eyes. It made me even more nervous. For heat and for blankets, I thought to myself. I grabbed my blanket and crawled into Danny's bed, shimmying under his covers and putting mine over the both of us. Danny lay on his side over at me, as remained sitting up, looking out the window. I felt a hand brush against my ribs and I turned to look back at Danny.
"Reuven, let's sleep."
I looked down at his blue eyes. They always burned with a certain intensity, but I could tell he was tired and cold, and just wanted to sleep. So, I lay down, wondering what would be the least awkward way to approach this. At some point I had turned so that I was facing him. My fidgeting had kept him awake and he was staring at me, so I stared back at him. Our faces were close and shrouded by darkness but I could still see his blue eyes peering in through me. I waited until he eventually succumbed to his fatigue and his eyes fluttered closed. I smiled, and closed my eyes too. With the help of our combined heat and blankets I was starting to thaw out. I felt warm, but especially on the inside.
