Wish Gone Wrong
A short story by me.
It was just another cold and eerie night for the two twin siblings, Darius and Deja, as they sat at home, playing board games their family pasted down from generation to generation.
"We really are alone", the younger brother Darius said with a sigh.
"Y-Yeah", Deja, the older of the two replied.
In the middle of their awkward silence, from out of nowhere, someone or something knocked on their front door. The two of them looked at each other. "I'll get it", Darius said.
The floor squeaked as he made his way to the door. He put his hand on the door knob, the door slowly creaked open, and there was a rather strange figure before Darius. What stood before him looked to be an old man. He had a scruffy white beard, and his clothing was tattered, as if he had not washed it in days.
"M-May I help you?" the brother stuttered
The old man looked up, which startled Darius. "Who is it?" the sister yelled from inside the house.
The old man started: "The two of you have been selected to win a very special prize." His voice was very slow and raspy.
"Sorry we're not interested", Darius quickly replied.
Deja ran up. "Don't be so rude!" she barked. "I'm bored, let's see what the guy has to say!
Unwillingly, Darius opened the door wider and welcomed the old man into their small home. The three of them sat at a table, and the sister brought over some drinks.
"So what exactly is this prize?" the brother asked sarcastically.
"You two have lived unfortunate lives", the old man said. "Therefore, I am here on this cold night to grant you one wish. This may sound sudden, but this tired body of mines has experienced much, and what I am telling you is no li-"shut your mouth!" Darius interrupted the man. "We've been through so much and you come here for this? Get out of our house!"
"Stop it!" Deja yelled. "You have no reason to act this way!"
"No reason?" Darius argued back. "Who's side are you on anyways?"
As the two argued, the old man just sat, shaking his head, looking at the twins as if he had really wanted to say something.
"Why can't you just let the man talk?" Deja demanded.
"He is obviously messing with us! All of this is a sick cruel joke! And you're falling for it right now sis!"
"I can show you young man, whether or not this is a joke", the old man whispered.
Darius grabbed the old man by his wrinkled shirt. "I thought I told you to get out of our house?"
Deja grabbed Darius's arm, "that's enough brother!" she screamed.
"Ugh!" Darius was yelling at the top of his lungs now: "Shut up! I wish you would just hut up!"
Then, there was a long pause in the small home.
"Your wish has been granted". The old man said coldly.
"Say what?" Darius was flabbergasted. Then, there was a loud thud to the ground, and Deja was there, clinging to her mouth, as her lips slowly began coming closer and closer to each other, and then, they were completely together. Darius could not believe what he had just saw. He felt as if he was in some kind of horror movie. Almost instinctively, he swiftly turned around in rage to the old man. However, when he looked, the old man was gone…
All that was left was a brother, who could never forgive himself for his actions, and a sister, who could never speak another word again…
