Summary: Melody Guthrie reflects on her loss of power after she is sent home. Post M-Day.
Melody Guthrie gave another heavy sigh as he looked out over the yellowing grass of her family's Kentucky home as she leaned over the railing, watching the fireflies begin to light the night sky. Their gentle glow seemed to remind her of herself right then. And she envied those little bugs and their bright flight. She didn't think she'd be home so soon and she was utterly despondent about it. The whole thing felt like a punishment. It wasn't that she didn't love her family or that she hadn't missed them but she wanted so deeply to still be a mutant. If anyone could have thought and prayed their way to having powers again, the middle Guthrie child could have.
She didn't understand why she had been singled out, why her brothers and sister got to keep their powers. Sam had always been the lucky one; he had been one of the first few students, he was an X-men and a hero. Paige was too; she had gotten out of Kentucky, worked her way onto a team too and she had a handsome, rich boyfriend. Even Jay, despite his reluctance to go to Xavier's, he was learning to use his powers, and was part of the New Mutants. She didn't even have a chance to really use her powers. Melody knew she would have done her powers and her family right if she had only been given the chance. With a heavy sigh, she looked up at the darkening sky again. She missed flying, missed the caress of the clouds, and missed the freedom of not being earthbound.
The slender brunette wiped the tears that came without her permission away from her cheeks. She knew there were people who didn't want to be mutants, like her own brother Josh but she was more like her sister Paige in that respect. She had always wanted to be a mutant. Now she was just painfully normal. And being a Guthrie was worse now than ever as everyone knew she had been a mutant, that some of her family members were still mutants and that most of her friends had been mutants. It just didn't seem fair. In one fell swoop, she had lost everything she loved but worst of all she lost her escape from all the stresses. Melody envied those fireflies right then and their bright flight.
