Renji sat at his desk, watching his captain surreptitiously. The man was doing paperwork, as he always was this time of morning. Renji was supposed to be doing paperwork too, but he kept getting distracted. Just like he always did wheh his captain was around. He didn't show it, of course, that would be beyond awkward.
Instead, Renji watched the Kuchiki's movements. The way his brush moved smoothly across the paper, never slowing down or speeding up. The surprisingly narrow hands that guided the brush. The lieutenant's eyes moved up to the broad shoulders, adorned with a captain's haori, and the controlled movements of his arms. His captain's hair, the color of onyx, was held in place by the kenseikan he wore every day. Finally Renji's gaze came to rest on the face. It was half-shadowed by his bangs but Renji had the features memorized. Sharp angles shaped a thin forehead and pointed chin. A small, almost delicate nose above the always-indifferent lips. And then there were the eyes. The eyes that Renji honestly feared. Those iron gray orbs that deflected attempts to get closer, that hid any remaining emotion the man might have left. It was a gaze Renji could never hold for long. There were few people who could, but that dodn't make it any better. Renji hated that fact that he feared the person he loved. And also, like the monkey who strove for the moon, Renji would never reach Byakuya. Yet he continued to try, continued to pursue the older man. Today was no different.
"Kuchiki-taichou? Do you want to go drinking with me?"
"No thank you, Abarai," the cold man replied without pause.
No, the monkey would never reach the moon...
