Deciding to go to McDonalds for a McChicken and a diet coke after classes was the worst idea I could have had. The drive through was backed up almost to the street and the inside looked like a madhouse. The line inside had close to fifteen people waiting for their orders and more waiting for their orders to be taken. I was beginning to think that the food wasn't worth the wait, and to just go home and make something. I did a mental checklist of what I had left in my pantry and realize that I had only chicken and beef roman. I made a mental note to go grocery shopping on my next day off.
I found the only parking stop furthest from the door and walked inside. I realized that there were more people inside than I thought. There seemed to be a birthday party going on in the kids play area. I noticed that the play area no longer had the ball pit I used to love playing in with my friends. It's sad to think that those kids will never experience that. I got in-line behind an elderly couple. The old man kept looking around like he was lost and kept asking his wife where the fountains were. I ignored them as best I could and looked ahead at the cashiers. There were four of them just standing like there wasn't a huge line of people waiting to order.
A couple of preteens came in and stood behind me laughing and giggling over what some boy said to one of them. I briefly wondered if their vocabulary consisted of any words other than 'like', 'totally', 'oh my god', and 'duh'. If I had ever used those words so many times in a minute like those girls were doing, I would have been stopped by one of my teachers at the private school I attended and lectured on the use of proper English.
I look back in the direction of the door and see a couple making their way across the parking lot. As they get closer I realize that I know them. It's been years since I've seen either one of them. They haven't changed in the slightest. I can tell, even from this distance, that they both have the same air of arrogance and coldness that they had the last time I saw them. The boy opens the door for the girl and freezes when he notices me. At first I thought he was going to turn around and leave, but the girl he's with doesn't seem to notice and gets in line behind the preteens. She was always an airhead and so oblivious to her surroundings. I had seen her walk into walls and poles on more than one occasion and keep on walking like nothing had happened.
A couple of small boys from the party run through the crowd towards the restrooms. Just by the looks on their faces, one could tell that they were up to no good. The last time I saw that look on a small boys face was when I was young. The boys would take some M80s and throw them down the sewers and manholes. I remember one time when they got lucky and blew a manhole cover off. How they managed that, I have no idea. Those were also the same boys that would accidentally hit a parked car while biking home.
I look back at the cashiers and see a short, bald man talking to them. He man doesn't look happy in the least. He turns to all of us and announces that there is a problem with the grills and are unable to make any patties. I role my eyes and wonder why they didn't announce this sooner. I could have been home by now.
As I walk towards the exit, I see the young boys come out of the restroom, armed with water guns. I quickly walk outside, just missing the spray. I laugh when I see my ex-boyfriend Tamaki and the airhead he cheater on me with get soaked by the boys. At lease something good happened today while I waited.
