A Not so Charming Prince and the Bold Orphan

In the Kingdom of Astisia, there lived two devastatingly handsome twin princes. They were the sons of Martin and Luella Davis, the King and Queen of Astisia. It was really hard to distinguish between the twins if one didn't know them personally. In public, people would always confuse them because virtually everything about them was the same, but looks could be deceiving.

If one could say that one twin was more charming than the other, one could easily say that Eugene was that twin. Gene was the friendlier of the two of them. His smiles were more honest and less forced unlike Oliver's. Oliver could be friendly if he truly wanted but he often got annoyed easily by people and would have to pinch the bridge of his nose in order to calm down before saying anything he might regret later, since that would not be princely behavior. However, despite trying to calm down, he would still say what was on his mind, no matter how harsh the comment was. Gene would then apologize to the person at the receiving end of his brother's critiques or insults.

In another part of the kingdom, there lived a beautiful young maiden named

Mai Taniyama. Mai was a sweet, hardworking, and an independent young woman. She lived under the care of a lady named Kimi Hara with her daughters Masako and Leiko. Technically speaking, Kimi Hara was her stepmother and Masako and Leiko were her stepsisters but Mai never considered them family because of the way they treated her.

Mai's mother died when she was two and so she could not recall much of her mother. When Mai turned five, her father was told that he had an incurable disease and that at any moment he could die and because of this; her father worked day and night to provide for her. That meant that he would often leave her in the care of an elderly woman named Kuniko Saeki when she was younger. He didn't see his daughter often because he was working to make sure that he earned enough money for her to get by on for when he passed away. It was when she turned 10 that her father remarried the woman named Kimi Hara. Her father remarried, hoping that when he left the world, his money would be able provide for Mai's well-being and that his new wife would provide her with emotional support but that did not work out.

When Mai first met Kimi, she instantly disliked her. She could tell that Kimi did not love him, though she did not know what love really was at the time. Call it intuition or a lucky guess but Mai believed she was after her father's money. This turned out to be true.

Her father and Kimi dated for about two months before the got married. Not a day after the wedding ceremony, her father died. While Mai's heart was broken, the brand new widow celebrated because she would get the money sooner than she expected. As soon as the funeral was taken care of, Kimi's true nature was exposed. It turned out that she had married twice before her father and had two daughters from the second husband. She had married her father because her second husband had died and because of the girls lavish spending, they were about to run out of money soon. A day after the funeral, she brought her daughters to live with her and Mai. Since there were only two rooms, one room went to Kimi while the room where Mai slept in was forcibly given to Masako and Leiko, and Mai was forced to sleep in the basement.

For the next six years, Mai lived with her wretched stepmother and stepsisters. Mai was forced to do the cooking and cleaning. When she turned 15, she also had to work full time. Her stepmother had ended up using all the money within five years that was intended for Mai and so the stepmother was constantly dating men to quench her and her daughter's lavish spending since they all refused to work. Kimi refused to give Mai any support so she told Mai that she had to get a job to earn her own money. With the constant demands of her stepmother and stepsisters, and to support herself, Mai could not afford to keep going to school. Despite not being able to go to school and having to support her-so-called-family and herself, Mai still found some time to educate herself. Though she had to do it secretly because her stepmother would yell at her if she found out.

"What are we doing here Gene?" Oliver questioned. He was irritated because his twin decided it would be fun to walk around kingdom in brown cloaks, covering them head to toe.

"Come on Noll, don't be like that. You can't honestly want to be at the meeting, listening in on how we should find a potential bride at the upcoming ball," Gene whined. Oliver just shivered at the thought at having all types of girls throw themselves at his brother and him. Gene noticed his twin shiver and smiled, knowing that he didn't want to be there as much as he did.

"But why are we here at this tea shop?" Oliver asked, still a little annoyed.

"I heard from Madoka that they have really good tea here," Gene said as he opened the door to a little teashop. The shop was not too big and though it couldn't fit a lot of people it was really crowded. There were a couple tables here and there and there were servers who were swiftly moving back and forth trying to attend to the costumers. It was a shop where one could self-serve or is waited on at a table and so Gene and Oliver went to sit down at the last available table. Once they sat down, a short brunette with warm brown eyes wearing the typical uniform consisting of a black skirt and a white blouse came to take their order.

"If you don't mind, can I ask you to take off your cloaks, you are sort of scaring the owner of the shop" The brunette asked sweetly. Gene chuckled and Oliver just sighed as they proceeded to take of their cloaks. The brunette blinked, looking at the twins, noticing that they were good looking but she quickly shook that thought because she had no time to thinking about that sort of stuff, when the shop was really busy. "You are new to this shop aren't you?" she asked. The twins were slightly baffled that the petite girl was not attempting to flirt with them.

"Yeah, we are. How do you know? Gene questioned.

"Well I work here like everyday and I would recall you two if you guys ever came here before," The girl giggled. "Since you are new here do you want me to give you guys an extra couple of minutes to make up you minds?" The girl questioned.

"No, we will order now" Oliver said, plastering a fake smile on his face.

"But Noll, I don't know what I want yet" Gene pouted but then the pout was soon replaced with a smile. "You know, why don't you surprise us?" Gene said.

"Are you sure?" The girl asked.

Before Naru could say no, Gene said, "Of course" and so the girl made her way to the kitchen.

"Gene, why did you do that? Oliver asked, irked at his brothers actions.

"Calm down Noll." After several minutes the girl came back with two hot cups of steaming tea.

"This is a blueberry green tea," she said as she set down the cup in front of Gene and then she set down Oliver's "and this is an Earl Grey. Hope you guys enjoy, let me know if you need anything else," the girl said as she was about to leave.

"Wait," Gene said.

"Yes?"

"I must say you really are good," Gene said. The girl gave him a questioning look while Noll looked at the girl with a curious gaze, carefully examining her.

"Pardon?" The girl said.

"You somehow managed to get our favorite teas" Oliver flashed a charming smile, wanting to see how she would react to his smile since she didn't swoon when she saw initially saw their faces. He didn't understand why the brunette didn't swoon when she was in the presence of the two handsome princes, not that he wanted her to fawn over him because he could only take so much fawning.

"Oh, nice to know that I haven't broken my record" she said giving Oliver a small weary smile, not giving him the reaction he was expecting. He wondered why she was looking at him like he was hiding something.

"What's your name?" Gene asked, internally laughing at the fact that Oliver was stumped that he wasn't given the reaction he was expecting.

"My name is Mai Taniyama, now if you excuse me I must go. Let me know if you need anything else." She turned to leave but before she did, she turned to face Oliver, "You know, shouldn't smile if you don't really mean it." With that being said, she left the princes with shock on their faces.
