What was this creature? And why was he unable to kill him?

Certainly he threatened. The small burgler knew that the dragon was capable of it. Smaug could hear the Halfling's breath quicken and his heart race.

But rather than devouring him, Smaug wanted to make him see his way. So strange considering that Smaug never bothered to gain allies before. He was strong and therefore didn't need them.

But this creature-this Hobbit-...it disturbed Smaug to see such an interesting thing loyal to the pathetic Thorin Oakensheild. He felt compelled to make this Hobbit see his way. Maybe Bilbo would give up on the dwarf and instead reside in the mountain with him.

He did prove to be interesting conversation...He was flattering and interesting. Not at all clumsy or dull like those dwarves or the Lakemen. For some reason, Smaug wanted his respect and his company.

He wanted to prove his power to the Halfling, even if it meant killing everyone else around them.

That was the last thought he had as he tumbled to darkness.

When he saw the fair creature again, it was many years later.

"This is an old college of mine: Dr. John Watson,"

How fruitful that his Halfling came back to him! This time, he was determined not to let go of this treasure.

"The name is Sherlock Holmes and the address is 221b Baker Street,"

He would never let go.
