If Things were Different

I've always gotten what I wanted - new brooms for my Quidditch team, attention from my classmates. but you - you were different.

I remember the first time we met at Madam Malkin's robe shop - I had no idea who you were, but there was just something about you that caught my attention. Unfortunately, we had pretty bad first impressions of each other.

And I suppose we really got off the wrong feet when I first introduced myself on the train. But you can't blame it all on me - I mean, you were the one who refused my friendship and chose Weasely instead. Actually, come to think of it, it wasn't my fault at all - I was justified in mocking Weasley - he was the one who had ridiculed my name!

And things really went downhill after that didn't it? Getting into fights, trying to get under each other's skin. But your eyes betrayed your true feelings - I know there was something else there besides rivalry and anger - lust, want, confusion. I know because my eyes reflected the same thing.

Maybe things could have been different if you took my offered hand, if we became friends, maybe even something more than just friends.

Pity it has to end this way.

I stand above you with my wand poised and the two deadly words on the tip of my tongue. Your emerald eyes shine with understanding, but also with regret. It's too late now. The green light fades. I lower my wand and walk away, never looking back.

Old grudges die hard, Harry, old grudges die hard.
