Disclaimer: I'm fairly sure I stole this idea, but I think it was Tommy and Kimberly then. Whoever I stole it from, sorry. I don't own anyone here, they all belong to Saban. Except Garth Brooks. He owns 'The Dance'. Right, that made absolutely no sense. On with the fic!

THE DANCE
By

Zhane sat on the terrace, staring at the stars. He was trying to pick out KO35's star, and not having much luck with it. Shaking his head, he got up to wander away.
"Zhane?" Turning, he saw Ashley coming towards him.
"Ashley. Shouldn't you be inside? It's your prom, after all." She smiled happily.
"Andros pleaded for a break, and I couldn't refuse. I don't think he's used to dancing so much."
"A queen's gotta do what a queen's gotta do, I suppose." Zhane said, smiling a little. Ashley had been voted Homecoming Queen, and had had to dance with every male in the place, or so it seemed.
"What about you? Shouldn't you be with Karone?" Zhane's face fell slightly.

Looking back
On the memory of
The dance we shared
'Neath the stars above
For a moment
All the world was right
How could I have known
That you'd ever say goodbye?

"Karone's dancing with Steve." he answered quietly. Due to neither of them knowing anyone else, he and Karone had come to the dance together, but she'd rapidly been whisked away. "Or at least she was last time I looked." Ashley put a gentle hand on his shoulder.
"Zhane, I'm sorry."
"Don't be. It's not like we were actually together together, so..." he trailed off. Ashley shook her head.
"Still..." She let it hang. "I'd better get back to Andros."
"Oh yeah, wouldn't want him to relax, would we." He grinned.
"Are you coming?"
"In a while." He turned back to the stars as Ashley returned to the dance.

And I
Am glad I didn't know
The way it all would end,
The way it all would go.
Our lives
Are better left to chance
I could have missed the pain,
But I'd have had to miss
The dance.

"Zhane?" Her voice was hesitant, pulling him from his thoughts.
"Karone." He acknowledged her, no more, no less. She sat down beside him.
"I'm sorry, Zhane."
"Don't be sorry. Are you happy?"
"Yes, I am." She glanced over her shoulder. Zhane followed her look and saw Steve standing in the shadows, patiently waiting. "He's sweet, and kind, and...everything you are, without the Power Ranger part. I can't..."
"You don't have to explain." He cut her off. "I just want you to be happy. Are you happy?" She nodded. "Then don't say anything. Just..." He got to his feet and held out his hand. "Just dance with me." Without hesitation she grasped his hand and allowed him to pull her to her feet. They swayed gently to the music from the hall, until the song ended.

Holding you
I held everything
For a moment
Wasn't I a king?
If I'd only known
How the king would fall
Then who's to say?
You know I might have changed it all

And I
Am glad I didn't know
The way it all would end,
The way it all would go.
Our lives
Are better left to chance
I could have missed the pain,
But I'd have had to miss
The dance.

Then Zhane stepped back and bowed a little.
"Thank you for the dance." And he turned and walked away...

Yes my life
It's better left to chance
I could have missed the pain
But I'd have had to miss
The dance.
