Title: Connection

Disclaimer: I own nothing

Summary: Daniel's thoughts after a discussion with Carter. Takes place early in the series. Just a quick little glimps into Daniel's mind.

"Daniel- you are just so… infuriating sometimes. Someone opens up to you and trying to make a connection and what do you do? Nothing. Do you just not want any close friendships? Is that it?" Carter asked Daniel.

"I... You just wouldn't understand," Daniel said to Carter as he walked off.

None of them understood how he felt or why he acted the way he did. Everyone he had ever loved had been taken from him. His parents, his foster parents, his fiancée, his wife, his friends, his career, his reputation. What did he have left? Why bring more people into it? Why create more happiness that will only be taken away?

Carter couldn't understand. Sure, she had lost people and experienced failure but she still had people, she still had a career and she still had a future. Jack, well Jack could understand him a little better but Jack just isn't the kind of person who he could talk to about this. And Teal'c. Who knows about Teal'c.

While walking down the corridor to his office Daniel realized something. He had come to think of these people as his friends and family. He worked, lived, bleed and triumphed with them. But he still couldn't let himself open up to them. To many fears, to many opportunities to be hurt. He would only let them down if he stayed this involved. It always ended in failure for him.

"Oh well," he sighed as he entered his office. No one wants to see a sad face- he had learned that early on. The only thing for him to do was put on a smile and pretend nothing bothered him. No one had to know. They would be leaving him soon enough. Nothing this good lasted for long.

Please tell me what you think. I am still new to this and appreciate the feedback. I really like Daniel's character. He is... complex, unique, intriguing. I hope they use his character more on the show.
