Here's a one-shot that's been spewing around in my head. I really like the Luna/Harry friendship and think it's under-looked a lot. Luna is a Ravenclaw after all, and I think she's very perceptive. So enjoy! Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter. I simply worship it.
Luna Lovegood understands Harry Potter. She knows many people don't realize this, but she does. She also knows that there aren't many people who really do understand Harry. He's painted as a hero in crimson and gold, but Luna knows better.
Luna always sees what others don't, and so there are little things she notices about Harry that others miss. He has scars that he won't explain the origins of, scars that look like they were caused by a broken piece of glass or a belt. One of his fingers is weirdly set, almost like someone broke it and never bothered to take him to the hospital.
Harry's scars are the most obvious sign, but Luna sees other things too. She sees the way Harry flinches ever so slightly when someone reaches out to him or hugs him. He's gotten better over the years, but a flinch is still there. His brilliant green eyes darken whenever he looks at a broom cupboard. Pain doesn't bother him, or at the very least he expects it.
Another thing Luna notices about Harry is that he doesn't seem to trust adults. At least, not enough to go to them with his problems. She remembers hearing Ron and Hermione whisper about the nightmares Harry was having and how he wouldn't go to Dumbledore. She didn't think they understood. She did. Harry wouldn't go to adults because too many had let him down.
Of course, Harry isn't completely damaged. Once in a while, Ron or Hermione and now even Ginny manage to get him smiling or even laughing. His eyes get lighter then, and he looks like an innocent little kid for a moment, the little kid he never got to be.
Of course, there are also the good things Luna notices about Harry. She sees the way he looks at them all sometimes, like he couldn't believe he had gotten that lucky. He looked at them as if he wanted nothing more to lock them up in a box and keep them safe, and she suspects he would if he could. She sees how he responds to the love and friendship around him, with awe and shock and thankfulness.
So really, in the end, Luna understands Harry Potter better than anybody else. She sees his scars, the ones you can see and the ones you can't, and knows he will be okay. Luna understands Harry Potter, and he couldn't be any more grateful.
