The one no one cares about. He knew it was true. Just because he was quiet and always had been. He didn't speak out, didn't often share his own opinions. But he listened. And he watched.

He saw them move to the neighborhood, felt himself begin to fall for her, and watched her be swept away into another's arms.

He didn't want to go through this again. Hadn't the last time, more than 15 years ago, been enough? Hadn't his heart been broken and pieced back together more than enough times for any man?

And still, he listened in silence. He saw tears being shed, disappointment, and heartbreak. And he was always there.

He would be there for her eternally. There was no chance for him to ever secure a small place in her affections, but he would always love her.

He watched and listening until the tears were dried and the smiles gradually disappeared. And he prayed for the impossible.
