Author's note: I loved the season premier. I really did. I just don't buy it that Booth is OK and, consequently, that Brennan does not see it.
So... here we are...
Hope you like.
Much love
Jane
All the happy endings
Brennan has always known that she knows many things scientific and grand but very little by heart. Of course, she has, since that assessment, made it her life's work to understand- not people- but Booth. And she knows. She knows that there is something missing. You can't see it, not really, unless you're Brennan and you have loved Booth for so long. But there is something missing. Something vital. As when you're breathing oxygen, but all you miss is air with pollen and spores and dust mites.
What gave them flavour is missing. They make love and it is good. They kiss and it is wonderful. They exchange love words and they make sense. They do their laundry and push Christine in her push chair and they are a family. But there is something missing. All that pollen and spores and all those dust mites are missing and all there is the oxygen. And she couldn't breathe for so long.
But, Brennan supposes, you cannot have a happy ending in the middle of the story. The frog cannot become a prince before the kiss, the children cannot go to the witch's house when she is away, the evil stepmother cannot be defeated until she causes pain to the orphan. Quests need to be quested. Adventures must be lived. The happy ending cannot come in the middle of the story.
They sat in that living room full of friends and family- because there are so many types of family (Brennan has discovered in all these years of loving Booth) - and they made love when they met after three months and oh, god (there is a god after all) because they are together again he is all over her, all hunger and thirst and absolution- but it is not an ending. Because if it was, it would not be a happy one.
Brennan knows many things scientific and grand, but she knows one only by heart: Booth. And Booth may look like he is fine, may look like he is OK. But Brennan knows better: she knows that there are three months of not okay, three months of loneliness and heartbreak and silence.
She knows it will be okay, but that is the kind of man Booth is. She will chew it and mull it until it is. She knows this with the same certainty she knows bones.
She just wishes she could give him more happy ending s for the little narratives in between.
Eventually it will be ok. Eventually, the dragons will be defeated; eventually, the shepherd will marry his princess and the stepmother will get her comeuppance. Eventually, they will look in each other's eyes and say "so, we're good?" and the other will agree. "We're good" and they will be.
It's just going to take a little while.
Because if it is not okay, it is not the end.
