Lost – To Go Back…
By Mystic
May 31st 2005
The dog licked at her hands as she stared at the door. Sun kept waiting for it to open, for Jin to walk in and smile at her. He always smiled, but Sun knew there was something he was hiding and she didn't know why he couldn't open up. She was his wife. Petting the brown wrinkled fur in her lap, she turned her eyes away and pulled her feet up under her.
She rested her head in her palm and listened to the tick tock of the hands in her watch as seconds passed and Jin wasn't home. Sun remembered before they were married, when he would sneak away from prying eyes and embrace her. He would look up into her face and his smile would spread, magically enveloping his eyes and she would feel complete. It was the only time she felt that way – in Jin's smile.
Someone walked down the hall and the dog jumped off the couch and scampered to the room, wagging its tail. Sun frowned, dropping her hand into her lap and flipping on the television. He was just working late, she told herself again and again as the channels passed with each click.
The lock turned and she let her eyes find their way to the door, not wanting to seem as excited to see him as she was. She wanted him to think she was furious at him for being so late. Her diner was cold, sitting in the oven and her stomach wasn't even hungry anymore.
"Sun?"
He called her name and she found the corners of her mouth rising, but she quickly pushed them down. She lifted her head to look at him and he held a bouquet of flowers in front of his face, removing it slowly to reveal his dark squinted eyes and then he dropped them fully so he could smile at her.
Her heart skipped and she swallowed hard, her lower lip trembling from the smile she refused to let through. "Where have you been?" She asked, wanting to sound angry, but her heart got the best of her.
"Had to work late," he responded with a shrug. "Your father is impressed by those who work the hardest, so I do my best to show him his daughter picked a good man."
"You don't have to work that hard," Sun shrugged her head towards a large clock on the wall. "It's past ten."
Jin lowered his head and placed the flowers on the table. "I'm new, it's necessary."
"Necessary? Jin?" Sun raised his chin with a long pale finger and smiled. "What's necessary is that you come home to your wife."
He nodded, but his smile faded.
"What's wrong?"
Shaking his head, the left corner of his mouth lifted. "I'm here now. That is what's important."
Sun took the flowers and looked into the kitchen. "You should shower, you smell," she teased. "I'll fix up diner."
He kissed her lips gently and went into the other room, his eyes still holding back something. Sun went into the kitchen and began heating up the diner that was going to be dry and cold despite her best efforts and she sighed, remembering the smiles she used to get and the honesty that lay behind them.
