She was tugging on the chains, but I knew it was pointless. I stared at the cell we were sharing trying to think of how to distract the guards.
"Niki." I call out once from the lower bunk as she refused to turn around and face me. I knew she was in denial. I couldn't blame her though. If I had unlimited strength to tear someone limb from limb and suddenly I couldn't even lift myself from bed, I'd be pretty pissed off too. "It's the serum. They got us both. Now, stop
yanking on that chain, and come and sit down for a sec."

"So what? So, you can lecture again, Peter?" She whipped around and stared me down. Powers or no powers that look of death still intimidated the hell out of me, of course I wouldn't let her know it. "I told you I was sorry. I should have listened and I was wrong. Okay. You want to hear it?" I felt myself yelling suddenly "I.WAS.WRONG." I knew any admittance of mistake on my part would result with her never letting it down. EVER.

"Okay." she responded with less tension in her voice, marching over to sit by my side."It's been a long time since--"

"Since you felt this helpless?" I added as she looked at me with surprise.

"You said that are powers are useless?"

"They are Niki."

"Then how did you read my mind?"

"Are you really surprised? We've fought side by side for months. What makes you think in all that time I didn't notice"

"Notice what?" she leaned in as I raise my hand to tuck several strands of hair behind her ear.

"I know you...how you are when you feel trapped. We've been dancing around the subject long enough, don't you think"

"I'm not getting into this with you, Peter." She rises up from her seat and makes her way to the top bunk.

"Or what? Since the breakout at the penitentiary you've held back. We found Micah...you have D.L. What else is it?" I don't even bother to get up, instead I lay down, and stare up at the mattress.

"Questions..." her voice grows a bit hoarse and I know I've hit a nerve, " Dammit! All these questions but never the right ones, Peter! "

"Which are?" I raise an eyebrow, interest led my curiosity. "Why is it we're here? HOW THE HELL did we end up with rhetorical questions about us, when it should be about trying to find our way out?!" Despite being furious, her voice remains steady and calm, "We've finally got what we wanted out of this chaos, Peter. So why can't we just stay away from each other?" I noticed her switch positions in bed as the mattress creaks on its metal coiled springs.

"Niki..." I take my time, mulling over what to say next, knowing that she'll won't want to hear it. "Hmmm." she responds softly, and I know she's trying play off like what I'm going to say won't matter.

My voice grows tense as I turned to my side, "What makes you think I got everything I want ? "

"LIGHTS OUT!" the slot at the door opens as another guardsman makes his midnight rounds. The lights immediately shut off, and we're cloaked in darkness. Sleep will evade us both, and I know in the morning she'll act like she always does with us; like nothing happened. Because nothing ever just happens with us, she was right about that fact.

But for now, I take the perverse pleasure knowing she won't be sleeping but thinking of me, of us, and that was enough to make me smile.
