In the ruins that was once North America, lies the nation of Panem a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them to send one boy and one girl, between the ages of 12 and 18, to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Prologue

She sat quietly at her seat by her desk, staring at her own shadow splayed before her in a mixture of dust and mildew.

She crinkled her nose at the stench of rat urine and bleach. This room bore no evidence of the events that led to dawn.

From this advantage point, it was just another abandoned house in the middle of nowhere, but underneath its floorboards, a game is about to end.

There were only four survivors now and if she studied hard, she could see their blood linking through the rose colored wallpaper and a deep voice of the gamemaker announcing her as a winner.

The fear she had felt earlier dissipated, as time drew on.

A sound of hurried feet reached her ears through the basement door, but still she sat quietly and waited the challenge.
