Of Silence and Signals

You can hear their fighting, it echoes through the hallways. They're so loud, that I actually have to put my hands over my ears. I'm actually surprised that a professor hasn't showed up yet. Eventually, they'll stop. But as I look back on it, I would've never guessed that this would be the day that they would finally get together.

It was a beautiful day at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Mostly everybody had left for breakfast by the time Ron and I were up. We quickly got dressed and headed down to the common room to wait for Hermione. When she finally showed up we headed to breakfast together; me in the middle, Ron to the right of me, and Hermione to the left.

We ate our breakfast and headed off to our classes. Classes went by as slowly as possible on a Friday afternoon. I seriously thought I was going to die from lack of entertainment. But finally they came to an end, and we headed to the Gryffindor common rooms.

That's when it all started…

Hermione was busy at work writing another five foot essay. Ron on the other hand was eating chocolate frogs and getting more hyper by the second; it was actually pretty entertaining to watch. He looked like a five year old; he was running around the common room and jumping off of random objects. He was also yelling at the top of his lungs. So, basically, he looked like an idiot.

Hermione, however, did not find it as entertaining as I did.

"Ronald, would you kindly sit down and stop acting like a toddler?"

Ron took offence to this.

"I am not acting like a toddler. I am simply having a little fun. Although, you wouldn't know what fun is, would you?"

"As a matter of fact I do. But it does not involve rampaging around the common rooms and yelling until my face becomes blue."

"Oh, come on Hermione. You wouldn't know what fun is if it bit you on the bum."

Both Ron and Hermione were getting pretty riled up at this point.

"I do too. I just don't waste all my time acting like an idiot!"

"Well, at least I don't sit around all day and read some bloody book!"

They were yelling now. They looked as if they were going to rip each others heads off at any moment.

"I don't care what you think Ronald Weasley! I'll sit around and read my bloody book all day if I want to!"

Ron suddenly went silent. It was a few moment before he finally spoke up.

"You…you just said 'bloody'."

"Yeah, I did. And?"

"But you've never cursed…I mean…never."

Hermione looked flustered all of a sudden.

"Well…you just made me so angry…and I just…I don't know. I just snapped."

"Bloody hell."

Hermione looked thoughtful for a moment. Then, she looked away and whispered something quietly.

"What was that Hermione?"

"…I said that…that's what you do to me. You…you get me so riled up, but…but s-somehow, I'm still head over h-heals for…f-for you.

Ron was speechless, once again. Hermione took this as a bad sign, and ran. Or at least she tried to. Ron caught her wrist before she could even reach the portrait hole.

"Hermione, wait!"

"NO! I don't want to hear what you have to say! I know you don't like me, okay? You don't have to tell me!"

"Hermione calm down!"

Hermione calmed down some, but still looked as though she could run at any moment. Ron spoke first.

"Hermione, I…I never knew you felt that way…"

"Well, I do. But I guess, you were just too stubborn to see it."

"I guess I was. But I can see it now. And I…I feel the same way about…you."

Suddenly, Ron swept down and pushed his mouth against hers. Hermione seemed too shocked to move for a moment, but she finally kissed him back.

I took that as my signal to leave.
