Summary: Yuuki makes Zero a mixed tape filled with lullabies as he wonders why she cares so much.
Sometimes he doesn't understand why she cares so much.
"Here," she says when she hands him a mixed tape, looking exceptionally pleased with herself. "It has a bunch of lullabies on it. Zero has trouble sleeping at night, right?" He kind of wonders if she knows he's not kid too.
"…I don't want it," he says flatly and watches her lips twist into a frown, how those same exact lips tug upwards into a smile just seconds later…a more comfortable expression.
"Don't you like soothing music? Or maybe you want a teddy bear instead?" He rolls his eyes at how ridiculous she's being (like he wants a teddy bear?) before he realizes her hand is touching his arm. She so close he could reach out and embrace her, but she doesn't seem to notice. "Which would you rather have?"
For this, he looks into her eyes. Those hazel eyes that gaze into his, large and innocent, and he wonders if she could see what he sees, what he thinks about, what he wants-the answer to her question. He thinks that maybe if she looked for a little bit longer, maybe if she didn't turn away, that she might have seen it. Maybe he could have told her this time. But the doors open and the Night Class appear, one by one. Yuuki hurries forward to greet them, leaving him gazing at her retreating form.
Maybe next time.
He makes sure to slip the tape into his pocket before he joins her.
She catches him humming "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" a few days later. He throws the tape into the back of his closet soon after.
