Did two halves make a whole? He didn't know. He should, it was a simple, a fucking simple math question, one half, one half, is one. But how could it be one half when it was so Goddamn broken? It was more like one fourth, one sixteenth. And that did not make one put with another half.
He lifted his face from his hands and looked over at Eddy. Eddy didn't seem to care. Of course, he had always failed math. He wouldn't know how to add fractions! Oh, God. Why was he even thinking about fractions right now?
Of course, math was always the same, no matter where you went. Math was universal. People could understand that they were not two halves. That they weren't one, that they weren't like that.
"Buck up, Sockhead," Eddy muttered.
"Why are you being so callous, Eddy?" Double D was indignant.
"Because I don't see why you gotta treat it like a big deal!" Eddy gesticulated wildly with his hands.
Double D put his face in his hands again. Oh, he should know by now, Eddy wasn't one to wear his more tender emotions on his sleeve. But yet Eddy had just shown him something tender, something he couldn't possibly fathom from him.
The recent memory of the kiss still stung his lips.
"Because it... doesn't mean anything, Eddy. It's natural for young men our age to want to... er, explore their sexuality." Double D said, his voice sounding unnaturally strong.
"Who's bein' callous, Sockhead?" Eddy said and stood up.
Eddy's hands went to his pockets, his well-trained face created a scowl. Double D peeked between his fingers at the boy. As always, his displeasure was evident. Eddy rolled his eyes, muttered something inaudible, and strode out of the room, slamming the door behind him.
Double D allowed tears to come to his eyes, things wouldn't, couldn't be the same now. Their halves had been broken further. He had broken Eddy's, he had broken his, but oh, he couldn't let Eddy know. He couldn't let either of them endure the ridicule of the kids if they were one. Just being one wouldn't put all those bits back in place either.
And Eddy couldn't have been sincere. He couldn't have. His brother was too much of a... he was too cruel for Eddy to be completely unscathed from all of that. Double D knew he would have to pick up the pieces anyway. But what happened when things went bad and things got shattered? Then who would step into his shoes? Ed?
Oh no, he was a loyal friend, Double D thought, but his odd quirks weren't quite as comforting as well chosen words.
Double D got up. He couldn't always be there for Eddy, and he couldn't put all these little, crystalline pieces back together. It was simple fucking math.
