Every Steamie and Diesel engine on the Island of Sodor has a special color that makes them really useful to their work as they help others with everyday matters which makes them count.
One day on the Island of Sodor, James was coming back from an important job that involved carrying passengers and shunting train cars.
He came to a stop at a station and saw that Arthur had the same color of red paint as him.
James was cross. He thought his red paint was the best red paint he had ever had.
"Why do you have red paint?" asked James.
"Because Sir Topham Hatt gave me it for being realy useful." replied Arthur.
"Rubbish!" snorted James. "I have the best paint of any engine on Sodor!
Arthur was confused about what James just claimed.
"But you don't have to be red to be really useful." said Arthur.
"Yes you do!" replied James. "I'm the most useful engine on Sodor, and it's all because of my red paint!"
"Even green engines can be useful."
"Like Percy?"
"Exactly! Percy is green, but he's really useful, just like you."
James thought about his friend Percy.
"And even though the other engines are different colors, it's what makes them really useful."
"But how am I useful?"
"It's not about how useful you are, it's your color that makes you special. Every engine is special in their own colorful way."
James smiled, and puffed happily back to Tidmouth Sheds, now knowing that he was special, just like all the other engines on Sodor.
