I just watched my mother die. She died for me. I didn't help her. She wouldn't want me to anyway, but... I need her... and she's dead.
I give myself a few more seconds to mourn her, but then I shall leave. Once I compose myself, I turn the corner, remembering my mother's instructions.
I see my destination, but there are men there, most likely brain-washed murderers. They spot me, and start to run, and I can't help but marvel at the synchronicity.
By some miracle I break my daze and shoot all but one walker. I notice his scraggly blond hair and his pale skin popping out against the early morning dimness and the black of his clothes.
Do I... know him? My mind is tugging at memories, but my mind is hazy, and I'm exhausted. But I know him... Will.
As he gets closer, his face clears and I can see him perfectly. His gun is posed, arm extended in anticipation of gunfire.
My throat constricts and my hands shake. 'Stay alive' I think 'Stay alive'.
At that, the bullet meets his chest.
I drop my gun, and hear a scream. My impulse tells me to pick it back up and aim, but I can't.
Someone - a girl - runs at me, and I pick up my gun. Wait, she's not running at me, but to Will. She drops herself next to Will's limp, lifeless body, sobbing into his shirt.
That girl is Christina.
"Hey, you," she screams.
"Yes," I choke.
"Tris, is that you?"
"Yes." I can't say anymore.
"How could you do this? I loved him... and now he's dead." I think of my mother, and what I felt when she died. I'm about to walk away when she says:
"... and you killed him."
"Christina I'm sorry!"I plead. "He was going to kill me, and was under the simulation. He was-"
"Stop lying to me." She says coldly. She's Candor, she knows I'm not lying.
"No, I'm not! Listen to me!"
"You're lying."
She steps backward and we appear in the Dauntless compound. She starts running through the Pit, and ends up over the chasm. It's when I scream her name that I realize I've followed her.
"You're lying," she says finally, before throwing herself over the railing and into the chasm.
I wake with a start, popping up and screaming her name. This seems to startle Tobias, who is lying beside me.
"What about Christina?" He says against my stomach, still groggy from sleep.
"Nothing, I just had a bad dream." I say.
"Want to talk about it?" He asks, he's trying to comfort me, but it still seems weird.
"No."
"Okay. C'mere. Lie down and go to sleep. I'll be here to protect you." He kisses the spot just over my belly-button, and I nestle into him, slowly drifting back to sleep.
