Ed squirms, shaking his normal leg to prevent it from falling asleep. He looks around for a clock, but judging by the sun dissolving into to horizon, he can tell they've been here a while.
"Are you done yet?" He groans, bored out of his mind.
Winry looks up, breaking her focus and glaring at him. "Shut up and be patient. I'll be done soon." She switches her wrench for the screwdriver, turning back to his automail leg and muttering under her breath, "Maybe if you wouldn't break it all the damn time..."
Ed scowls, crossing his arms. "Hey, it isn't my fault that I'm accident-prone."
Winry lets out a harsh laugh, "Saying you're 'accident-prone' would be putting it extremely lightly. I swear, trouble finds you like Den finds scrap meat."
"Hey, it's not like I try to get myself hurt! It just... happens." Ed shrugs, looking away.
"You ought to be more careful, Ed."
"Yeah."
Silence ensues, accept the screech of a wrench of the clang of metal against tools until Winry leans back in her stool, glancing up at Ed and nodding. "You're done."
He stands up, stretching and testing out the repairments. Winry takes note of his straining muscles and turns away, blushing.
"Ah, thanks, Winry," he says, and flashes a genuine smile at her, the kind that can be so rare. The kind that lights her whole body on fire and her heart soar, because she's become accustomed to looking forward to seeing them. During his training, and his time in Central, as a State Alchemist... It seemed like she never saw him, let alone got a smile out of him.
"I was so worried about you," she says aloud, and instead of trying to cover it up, she just locks her eyes onto his of golden wheat and warm embers and everything good and sound and right.
He gulps and rubs his neck, leaning against the wall. "Yeah... yeah, I know."
"I was so afraid you'd get yourself into too much trouble and wind up dead, or some prison. It drove me mad, Ed. You barely ever called, and all I ever did was worry and worry and worry because you meddle and you're so headstrong, and so brave. I was so afraid it would end up taking you away from me." She barely whispers and, surprisingly, her eyes remain dry.
Ed just looks at her, unsure of what to say. There's so much, so much, he wants to tell her. But he just doesn't know how to say it. Even if he wouldn't admit it then, Riza was right on the money; he loves Winry, and he really always had. But despite how obvious it was to everyone else, all the years in Resembool and being her friend had clouded his real feelings for her.
It didn't take a scientist, or a mechanic or an ex-alchemist to see that they loved each other.
So instead, he sits back down and grasps either side of her face, leans in and gently, yet ever so passionately, presses his lips against hers. He can feel her go rigid under his touch, and it makes him want to laugh, but he just kisses her. It feels so right, so whole. It's filled with every word that he wants to say, every admission, every word of gratitude and lust and love that he could muster through all those years.
When they finally break, she's the first to speak.
"I love you, Ed," she says without a hint of hesitation in her smooth voice.
He chuckles and places his forehead on hers, looking her dead in the eye.
"I know," he admits and she laughs, because she wouldn't expect anything less.
"You don't have to worry about losing me; not anymore," he says, placing his hands on her neck and searching her brilliant blue eyes.
"I love you, Winry," he whispers, leaning in and kissing her again.
Winry hums in delight, her hands landing on his hips as she scoots her stool closer.
