It had seemed like the days we spent together were endless. Duo and I had always had wonderful times together, but we had our fights too. Other than that, we had always been the best of friends.
It was a huge surprise to suddenly get a phone call from Heero that said that he had an accident and was now in a coma. It didn't seem possible for the usually lively young man Duo had become after the war ended; would turn into a motionless figure in a hospital bed. Not possible, never could be.
It had always been a daily struggle for Duo; even though nobody knew until he had tried to end his life. When he had driven over that bridge; he had obviously been in despair and had forgotten there was only a slim chance he could've died. Then again, apparently plunging only a few yards to the ground seemed deadly enough if you got the short end of the stick and end up landing on another car on the driver's side.
He had been planning to get engaged to a young woman who went to the same college as he had been going to. When she had heard; she had been so devastated. All of his professors were also puzzled at his strange behavior, and even his close roommate didn't seem to have any clues of what led him to try such a thing.
As far as most people knew, everything had been going well in his life. Maybe he had just suffered from to much trauma in the war, and couldn't find any escape without making it public. Whatever had happened had been purely intentional.
There had been some witnesses near the car which he landed on had been driving. People said they had suddenly heard someone's tires squeal, but didn't think much of it at first. It was when the first man yelled and pointed to the car driving straight towards the wall that they realized that they were in danger.
Some people said they saw him unconscious; while others claimed he had a look of happiness and relief on his face as he plunged towards the ground.
If it had been financial problems, stress from daily life, or just war trauma. Nobody could say for sure. He had given no indication he would ever try something like this, and even if he had told someone; no one would've believed him.
Who would expect it from a famous war hero? Apparently, he had used his unbreakable charm to cover up any depressed thoughts from even his friends. Duo had planned this to go uninterrupted and to kill him instantly.
He hadn't been lucky enough though. That one car that had happened to be in the right place at the right time had saved Duo's life, but had also made him permanently cut off from the world.
It was hard for me to grasp the truth that if Duo had a choice; he wouldn't want to live that way. Not as some useless person who lied in a bed all day with no hope of ever waking up again. So, I had pulled the plug on his life support.
Everyone had supported the decision, so I didn't do it without any one else knowing. It still didn't lessen the pain when I saw him stop breathing altogether, and his pale features begin to look more of a ghostly white when he passed on to the other side though.
