Girdles and belt buckles and shirttails, oh my. This was hardly the elegant affair that Alexis had imagined. Obviously, it didn't help that she couldn't see above anyone's waistline; though her cousin, Stefan, often marvelled at how she was growing, Alexis felt she had a long way to go. It had been ferociously impressed upon her that she was never to look up at the adults; she was, after all, a mere peasant child, a charitable obligation, and had no right to look them in the eye. Sighing, Alexis gazed about, wishing that she were just a little bit taller.
