PROLOGUE
It had been over two centuries, but the heartache still resided within England. A solemn face amongst a crowd of smiling faces, he had now become used to the idea that America no longer looked up to him; he no longer held any adoration or love for his former older sibling. The realization felt like a punch in the face; a knife plunged right through his heart.
Every time he looked at America, the scars and scabs were torn open once more, bleeding more each time. The insults didn't make it any easier. Constantly he was hit with sour words from the younger, words like, "You used to be so great; what happened?"; words that stung like a bottle of peroxide being poured on an open wound.
He had always adored America, and after trying to stop, he knows that he still does now, regardless of the circumstances.
Night after night England wonders what he had done so wrong to cause his little brother to recede from being just that. His little brother. Sure, he had raised taxes and used military force to keep him close… But he had never known that he'd pushed him away so much. Had he really been so selfish by wanting to keep his beloved brother by his side? Was it really the desire for independence that drove America away? Or was it something bigger than that, something more serious… Something more…
No, he thinks, cringing at the thought. It cannot be that.
