I do not own anything of J.R.R. Tolkien. All the characters are his. Don't sue me b/c I am a poor college kid.

"How dare him! How dare him!" yelled Saruman after the new "White Wizard" left. Saruman was furious. How dare Gandalf break my staff and kick me out of the White Council. I am Saruman of Many Colors. What went wrong? What went wrong was quite simple. Saruman had overstretched himself.

His problems began many years ago. He was the leader of the White Council then and known as Saruman the White. All the members of the White Council had different interests. Radagast studied animals, Gandalf studied the half-lings, and Saruman studied lore and mechanics. Saruman's quest for knowledge and power grew. He studied lore and discovered that the One Ring created by Sauron had not perished; it simply had not been found. This revelation had made Saruman delve deeper into the lore. It was during one period of intense studying that Saruman discovered the powers the One Ring has. He already knew the poem written about the Ring and the others which were created. He did not care for the other rings at the moment. He knew the seven Dwarf rings had been destroyed, the nine rings given to Men were gone, and the three Elven rings were hidden away. What he wanted was the One Ring. The poem stated "One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them/One Ring bring them all and in the darkness bind them."

It was this ring Saruman wanted. With it he could rise up and banish all evil. There were certain characteristics Saruman found that would identify the One. The One was a simple band of gold that when thrown into a fire would not melt, but writing would appear. All this information slowly began to corrupt Saruman and caused his eventual banishment.

After all that had happened to him in the past few days Saruman knew he acted a fool. He was ashamed to admit that fact to himself. He had let the idea of the Ring's power taint him and now, thanks to Grima, it would be his demise. Grima, that stupid snake, had thrown out Saruman's precious palantír. Hopefully Gandalf will not know what it was that Grima threw, but now Saruman's thoughts passed to how he was going to punish Wormtongue. This was going to be a long day for that sniveling serpent.

Grima's punishment was brutal. First Saruman hung him out the window by his foot and just mere inches out of the Ents' reach. Next he whipped him until Grima was mere inches from death. Finally, Saruman broke Grima's mind. Now Wormtongue was truly a mindless being. He now lay on the floor whimpering and drooling. That will teach that fool not to cross Saruman again.

A horrible thought crossed Saruman's mind. What if someone peers into the stone and sees Him, the Dark Lord? That would not bode well for Saruman. The Great Eye would see whoever looked into the palantir and know that Saruman had lost it. He would also see the treason Saruman committed against Him. These thoughts enraged Saruman even more and he took out his rage on poor Grima. This time he cut out his tongue and made the little man eat it. Next, pulled out Grima's fingernails one by one relishing in the agonizing screams coming from his victim. "Grima, Wormtongue," Saruman yelled, "You are a snake and a snake I will make you truly." With those words Saruman cut off Grima's limbs, forcing the man to crawl around for the remainder of his life, like a loathsome snake.

After his final torment of Grima, Saruman retired to the upper levels of his tower. While looking out the window he saw a black spot appear on the horizon. "What is that?" he wondered. All too soon he knew the answer. A Nazgûl was flying straight toward Orthanc. Saruman's face paled and he began shaking. He was powerless and danger was coming. He knew he would not survive if the Ringwraith breached the walls of his tower. Fear finally overcame him and he collapsed. Despair crept into his heart and he knew it was all over.
