Disclaimer: You think I own the Potterverse? Are you delusional or what?
A deserted battlefield, covered in blood; a little girl, crying for her mother; a wife weeping for her husband; a husband killed in battle. Not in the same family, thought these tragedies are, linked they do remain. Hated by the same group of haters, hunted by the same group of hunters, murdered by the same group of murderers. And he laughed—the one that led them laughed a ruthless laugh, full of anger and hate. All of this, while in a prison cell, their hero cried out, thinking, "It shouldn't have ended this way. But now, it's over."
"My fellow witches, wizards, and students, I come to you with unpleasant news." Loud whispers overtook the Great Hall of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. "Lord Voldemort--" involuntary shudder "--has taken the ministry." Whispers turned to silence. And silence turned to chaos.
"I must ask that you not panic!" At this everyone was calmed to a point of listening. "Hogwarts is safe. Is that not why you are here to begin with? The rest of our world has been unsafe for a long time--"
"Since Potter turned!" One of the students shouted out, followed by murmurs of agreement.
"For a long time," headmaster Albus Dumbledore continued more forcefully, "and knowing such is the reason that all of you, children and adults, are here at Hogwarts. This is no longer merely a school; we are a wizard community! We, as a community must stand together as one--"
"We've heard this all before, Dumbledore!!" a worried father interrupted. "Are you trying to tell us that 'standing together as one' is going to defeat You-Know-Who? Because if that's what you're saying, well, well I don't know, but that's something!"
"No, I am not saying that. I am simply stating that if we continue to work together, it will prevent us from falling, and keep Hogwarts and ourselves safe."
Dumbledore was finished and sat down indicating so. The students and most of their parents left the Great Hall, stricken, and went their separate ways. Even the professors looked mildly panicked. All while a weary Albus Dumbledore could not help but think, "Hogwarts is safe for now, but whatever is to come?"
He ran like he'd never run before. Everyone knew of the Dark Lord's siege on the ministry, but they knew not of his plan to break Azkaban, nor to attack Hogwarts! And all within the next fortnight! He had to warn Dumbledore, warn someone, but the journey back would not be easy. The Dark Lord knew of a spy among the ranks. He knew who it was. Tripped by a tree root on the forest floor through which he was running, he fell to the ground with a loud thud. The man lay there in the dirt and rock hardness of the Forbidden Forest for what felt like an eternity, simply lacking the will to go on. But looking up at the cloudy night sky, his thoughts cleared.
With a new determination, he rose and continued the impossible journey to get away from the Dark Lord, and to the safe haven of Hogwarts, undetected. Now that his cover was blown, he may as well make himself known as a supporter of the Light to all that resided at the old school, for clearly he could never return to Voldemort and the Death Eaters. No, Draco Malfoy would never be going back.
