My first anything Death Note related. This one's been sitting around for a bit, though. *rolls eyes at myself*
Death Note. Not mine.

"Hey, Mel, you know what's great?"
"What?"
"We're best friends."
They were lying slumped on a couch, enveloped in a silence only broken by the occasional cartoon blast from the PSP and Mello's quiet munching. Suddenly, Mello took a breath.
"Matt?"
Matt tilted his head slightly to look at the blonde, whose normally impassive face looked suddenly pensive. He raised his eyebrows, still not missing a beat on his game. "Yeah?"
The word hung suspended in the air for a long moment, Mello not making a sound in response. Matt finally sighed and switched the game off; the fluorescent light that had lit up the dim room before died and left them both in shadows.
"What, Mello?" Matt sighed, reclining at last on the sofa, staring out the window into the gloomy and overcast skies. Mello broke off another piece of chocolate from the bar he was holding and chewed thoughtfully.
"Nothing, I was just thinking." With that, he groaned and settled back against the pillows again. Matt raised an eyebrow.
"About what?"
"Nuh-thing," Mello mumbled, each syllable punctuated by a bite of what was obviously chocolate, though Matt couldn't see all too well in the dim light from the window. He sat up and glared.
"What are you trying to do?" he demanded, and Mello snorted into his Ghirardelli.
"I was just thinking about something you said to me a long time ago," Mello said casually, reaching out with his neck to take another bite, and Matt rolled his eyes and smacked the chocolate out of his hands. It fell on the floor with a clatter, and Mello gave a choked squeal. He turned slowly to face Matt, eyes glaring murderously.
"Fuck you," he growled. Matt closed his eyes briefly, leaned forward, and reached for his PSP, but froze when he saw Mello's hand shoot out and poise itself dangerously over the glassy screen. Glaring, the redhead leaned back against the couch, and, grinning smugly, Mello did the same.
There was another silence.
"Will you just say what you need to say, Mel?" Matt groaned finally, and Mello flinched slightly at the last word.
There was a pause.
"I was just thinking about when we were kids, that's all," Mello said suddenly, the words tumbling over each other in their haste to get out, and Matt's eyes widened as they met Mello's emerald ones, which looked away quickly. "When you told me it was great...that we were...best friends..."
The blonde's face was growing redder and redder by the minute, and Matt couldn't to ignore the sudden fluttering in his stomach as he reached an arm around the other and pulled him in closer.
"Yeah, it is great, huh?"
