Recently saw the movie for the first time, and I wanted to shed a little are more light on Maleficent's companionship with Diaval (or Diablo, if you prefer) instead of focusing on Aurora so much.
Reviews and comments are welcomed, but please be respectful. Thank you!
Prince Philip occasionally noted how Aurora had this silly habit of calling Maleficent her shadow. And well, he supposed it was true for the most part. Every hour of every day, the faerie lady who keenly watched over the Moors also watched over her godchild just as keenly. Wherever he roamed with her, hand in hand, Maleficent was never that far behind keeping a protective eye on them both.
Yet Philip gradually began to notice that all this harmless shadowing was actually twofold— because whilst Maleficent followed them, her henchman, Diaval was always trailing her too.
Sometimes when Diaval's in his truest form, perched contently upon the tip of Maleficent's magical staff, Philip would see her grant his nightshade feathers a graceful stroke, receiving a birdlike purr in return before they soared off together again.
Thus during one bright summer afternoon, while Maleficent was away in the distant meadow teaching little Queen Aurora about healing herbs that could be found in the wild, Diaval stood once again as a man in black on a rocky ledge nearby, admiring the scene played out before him. Smiling a bit himself after Aurora briefly turned to wave at him, Philip approached the ledge to join Diaval.
"They've become quite the amazing duo." The raven confirmed, sensing the boy stopping by his side.
Philip nodded; but his simmering curiosity over the whole situation wouldn't allow him to keep quiet for long, and to the raven he asked, "Why do you stay here, Sir Diaval? What is the point? Surely Maleficent's power is great enough to take care of things by itself. Isn't your loyal service to her somewhat void? Do you have any interest of leaving the Moors?"
Diaval's steady gaze had barely stirred from the two maidens, refusing to show the royal boy anything but his profile. Philip however had caught the slight curl of his mouth which turned into a knowing smirk.
"This place has become my home, young Prince. And growing attached to things like princesses in need and dejected faeries who are lost tend to complicate other things in life. As little as I do for Mistress now, I still feel like I owe it to her." Diaval pauses momentarily, reevaluating the possibilities. "...Besides, even though her power is great, I know there may come a day when she'll need me again. And I shall be there, forever waiting, wings and all."
