Speed of Sound

The first time had been breath-taking in its unexpectedness. After years of being trapped within the confines of limitations, she couldn't explain the feeling, the release she'd experienced when her feet had first carried her across fields, streets, boundless destinations. She'd felt her heart soar as steadfast as her feet were. She was free. But then there were… complications. She'd been recruited into the activities of Arthur Petrelli. Still, no matter what she had her new ally, her freedom from the stillness.

This… This was nothing like that first time.

Not at first.

The moment caught her like a blow out of nowhere. In one instant she'd stood by Matt's side, the next he was across the room… with her, another… another Daphne. It took a beat for the scene to clarify and for her to understand… She had just experienced this, she had been standing where this other Daphne had stood… this was the past, the very recent past. She watched as once again she touched Ando… and disappeared in a shower of red sparks coursing over her. She had rejoined the time she'd just left.

It had quickly been understood what this meant, how this was the solution they had sought, the very reason Ando had injected himself with the syringe she'd snatched out of Mohinder Suresh's hand.

She could save Hiro.

So the stage was set. She'd looked to Matt once more and then she'd taken Ando's hand, taking this new trick for a true spin. Just like the voices of the city had exploded inside Matt's head, before her eyes the whole world seemed to open like an endless road. It unfurled before her eyes and she took it all in. It was impossible to put into words, too brief but still registering in her mind as she could feel the progress of their journey.

Soon they had found themselves at the time they had sought, found Hiro. She did not slow down, simply captured him into her wake and began the journey back to… the present, the loft… back to Matt. Knowing he was there was more and more of a thrilling feeling. For all the reasons she had to run, he wasn't one of them… he made her want to stay. And pulling to a stop back in the loft, his face made her smile… She was home.

The End.
