When Mac and Robin came into the family therapist's office they were both pretty mad at each other. Tess greeted them with a smile and motioned for them to take a seat.

"Now," Tess said, "you are…"

"I'm Robin and this is my Uncle Mac. You must be Tess?"

"I am," Tess said, "so why don't you start Robin"

"Okay well Uncle Mac has raised me since I was a little girl and I love him to death but lately since I started dating a great guy-"

"HE IS NOT A GREAT GUY," Mac interrupted.

"Excuse me. She was talking and I want to hear what she has to say"

Robin mouthed 'thank you' to Tess who smiled warmly at her and she continued, "Anyway since I started dating Stone my uncle has been having a cow and a pig and a goat. All we ever do is argue"

"That's because you're acting stupid"

"Excuse me," Tess said, "you'll have your chance to talk. This is her turn to talk"

"The latest fight," Robin continued, "was because of something that happened a few nights ago. I'm 13 ½ going on 14. I went on a date with Stone and he didn't feel well so he asked me to drive home. We live in the same brownstone. Anyway I was picked up by the police for underage driver."

Mac started to interrupt again but Tess gave him a look

"My uncle Sean who is the chief of police decided to drop the charges. Uncle Mac was not happy about that. He tried to insist that Uncle Sean don't do that but he ignored Uncle Mac. Afterwards Uncle Mac and I got into an argument and I walked away"

"Can I talk now?"

"Go on then"

"I just don't know how else to get through to her. I mean I've tried everything."

"Be more specific when you say everything"

"I tried yelling at her, grounding her, criticizing her, giving her extra chores… I would never hurt her but sometimes I think that's the only thing left to do"

"Okay," Tess said, "Mac did it ever occur to you that maybe you're not hearing what she's saying?"

"What do you mean?"

"When was the last time you and Robin sat down and actually had a conversation? I mean, when was the last time you told Robin you care about how she's feeling and you love her and that you want to listen to what say has to say"

"Not in awhile," Mac admitted, "Robin I do love you. I just am not sure how to be a proper parent."

"Well maybe I'm just a bad kid," Robin said

"NO YOU ARE NOT A BAD KID," Mac said, "You're my world and I'm just trying to protect you."

Robin and Mac shared a hug and decided to go out for a bite of dinner and discuss the situation further.
