Parallel Earth – London - 2014

Rose Tyler stood in the control room, staring down at the floor. She'd been told that the dimension cannon had started to work – at the same time that the stars had started going out – and she needed to test it. If it worked, she could use it to travel back to her own dimension and find the Doctor again; not that she didn't like her life in this parallel world, working for Torchwood and helping defend the Earth from alien threats. But life without the Doctor….

"Charging," the technician said loudly, his voice echoing off the high ceilings.

Rose squared her shoulders and met the technician's gaze. "Are you sure the coordinates are correct?" she asked. The last thing she wanted was to be shot into the wrong dimension. Or the wrong city. Finding the Doctor was going to be hard enough.

"I've double checked them," she was assured.

"Okay." Rose nodded. "I'm ready."

"Ready."

One second Rose was standing in the Torchwood control room, the next she was gone in a burst of light.

Earth – London – 2009

Rose came to her senses in an alleyway. Looking around, she recognized the familiar London streets. She took a few tentative steps out and paused when she saw the people on the ground writhing as white creatures detached from their bodies. Adipose, Rose thought, looking up at the sky.

An alien spaceship hovered in the air, its bright lights streaming down. The Adipose babies walked into the beams of light and were levitated up into the air, squealing delightedly.

As soon as all of the babies were on the ship, it roared off, leaving utter silence in its wake. The people in the streets got on their mobiles, calling loved ones, friends, anyone to just to see if they were all right. Rose walked through the throng of people and stopped at a barricade, watching as the police surveyed the situation, making sure that everyone was okay.

She heard the clack of heels behind her. "Listen," a female voice said. Rose turned and immediately recognized the woman. It was Donna Noble, the one that was so integral to whatever was causing the stars to go out.

Trapped in the parallel universe, Rose was unable to get in contact with the Doctor, but the trial runs with the dimension cannon had all converged on the mysterious Donna Noble. Somehow, she was important to the Doctor and all of the timelines seemed to converge on her….

"There's this woman who's gonna come along, a tall, blonde woman called Sylvia. Tell her, that bin there." She pointed to a rubbish bin on the corner. "Right, it'll make since. That bin there!"

Donna smiled and ran off excitedly. Rose turned and sighed. She'd been so sure that this would be it. She'd be reunited with the Doctor and together, they'd save the universe again. Just like the old days. But where was he? London had just nearly been invaded by aliens and the Doctor wasn't there!

Slowly, she turned and started to walk away. After a few steps, she faded away.

Parallel Earth – London – 2014

Rose was back in the control room at Torchwood. "Well?" one of the technicians asked, standing up from his computer.

"He wasn't there," Rose replied, her voice soft. She'd been so optimistic, but she had failed. She wouldn't give up, though. She'd continue to travel back to her proper home with the dimension cannon until she found him. She wouldn't give up. "Let's try again," she said, sniffing. The sooner they tried again, the sooner she'd be reunited with him. "What's next?"

"The ATMOS devices," the technician replied.

ATMOS, the Sontaran invasion. The Doctor would be there. She knew it down in her bones. Holding her arms tightly around herself, Rose went over to the computer console and got to work.
