Author's Note: This is my first attempt at a Twilight fic; I hope everyone enjoys. With the story beginning more or less two thirds of the way through New Moon, everything up to that point is fair game, spoiler-wise. As for narrators, I'm going with Bella, Edward and Jacob. Each chapter after the Prologue will begin with the name of the person telling the story, and any time a perspective changes mid-chapter, which I don't plan to do often, that will be noted too.
Preface
The young leech I'd shoved into the grinder leapt back onto the platform. Her clothes had been shredded to pieces, but it turned out that the screeching sound of tearing steel hadn't come from her. Apart from her ruined clothes, she didn't have a mark on her. The smell of smoke started rising from the machine below. The gears had been ground and crushed to pieces while the vampire emerged unharmed.
The smoke was already thickening. This place hadn't been operational in years, but between the machines and leftover oil residue that never quite faded, the fire could blow through the entire metal structure in minutes if we were that unlucky. Considering how my luck had run lately, I thought minutes might be a little too optimistic.
The girl's enraged scream grated on my ears even worse than the stench burned my nose. She crouched to spring, but never got the chance. What she hadn't realized was that when she'd jumped out of the grinder, she'd put herself between me and the largest of the Cullens.
Arms the size of tree trunks clamped around what used to have been a girl no older than fourteen. She screamed out in protest and tried to throw Emmett off, but I was already there. Flesh that could come through an industrial mineral grinder unscathed didn't fare so well against werewolf teeth.
The rest of the pack caught up, Sam automatically resuming point. The Cullens were just a few feet ahead of us as we charged on. I caught Sam's thoughts as he gave an experimental sniff of the air ahead. Looks like four more. He didn't mention that there was still no sign of the reason we were here.
It was only seconds later, dashing single file through a narrow doorway, that we spotted the one responsible. Victoria watched our approach with a frightening calm. Even though she had no exit, and was now cornered by a veritable army of werewolves and vampires that had just torn her forces to shreds, she was totally at ease. The corners of her mouth curled upwards as we got closer, revealing rows of sparkling teeth. Her eyes were on Edward, and the smile was one of undisputed triumph.
The pack all yelped in shocked unison as they felt the jolt of terror that ran through me.
