1000 Hours, 19 January 2572
I heard the Covenant grunts walking around the leaves that scattered the ground, also the mechanical whine of the turrets rotation position. The grunts had been used as cannon fodder for centuries. Short, stocky and standing maybe four feet tall, they were easy to kill and in singles not difficult. When they charged en masse then you had troubles, they charged you and you felt the ground shake in your boots.
I sneaked the fiber optic probe around the corner of the wall we were using for cover. Making sure that it would be very difficult to see, I linked it up with the HUD on my faceplate. I saw enough grunts for a large squad wandering around, with five plasma turrets watching the area.
I switched on my boom mike and whispered, "Lopez, get those turrets out of the fight. Any shots left in the tube, after you get all the turrets, you can fire into the clumps of grunts. Go on my signal." PFC Lopez nodded and hefted the Jackhammer. I held my finger up and then pumped my first twice. He ran out of the cover of the wall and took aim at the first turret.
He let the first one fly. It streaked to the target and exploded after it hit the base of the gun. He started the take aim but the turret was too fast. It fired and the PFC dropped to the ground. I mumbled a swear word and then stuck my head around to fire. I let a burst go and hit one of the grunts in the arm.
"Linda, kill those turret gunners," I spoke once again into my boom mike and then heard four rounds fire rapid. Our team sniper, Staff Sergeant Linda, had been hanging back waiting for something to come so she could kill it. I pulled a grenade from my pocket and threw it from behind the cover of the wall.
I gave my team the signal and we jumped out and began firing on full-auto, as the grunts scattered and tried to run we cut them down. Once the grunts had been cleared a gold armored elite came charging at us. I clicked my mike once and Linda started firing on it. After the first shot the rest of Spartan Team Easy fired on it. The elite fell over and started twitching, I gave Linda permission to shoot it in the head once more.
Then a voice started speaking, "Training exercise completed. Good job Easy." I went over the Lopez's body. Since this was a training exercise he wasn't dead, just stunned until I hit a button on his armor. I punched the button and the PFC woke up right away.
"That was good Easy, but I've seen better!" Master Sergeant Hodges came walking over to my team. "If you had used your sniper ability the first time then you wouldn't have lost Lopez! But aside from that you took the Covenant CP and killed its commander with only one KIA. Not bad." Coming from Master Sergeant Hodges that was a good compliment.
"Since you think they got it down Sergeant, they have a important mission to get to." I turned and saw a naval officer walking towards us. He was wearing the silver eagles of a Captain.
"Officer on deck!" I barked bringing the entire team to attention. The Captain returned our salutes and put us at ease. "We have some trouble in the Coral system and we need Easy and Spartan Team Dog to go with the marines that are heading there. There's briefing timed for 1500 hours so make sure they are ready to be there by 1345," He saluted again and walked away.
This will take longer to update. So don't expect updates every few days, it might take me a week or two to finish the chapters.
