Her hair was blue that morning. Midnight blue. It spilled across the pillow, bright and bold against the white sheets.
She was lying on her side, and so was he. Before, they slept closed together, curled around each other. Now, however, they slept curled around their son, their faces turned towards each other, and him.
Their son.
His wife.
His son.
Teddy Lupin. Tiny and perfect, he lay between them, wrapped in his own soft blanket. Though he was just a few months old, he already had a tuft of hair, constantly changing colors. That morning, it was bright lavender, and despite the war and the pain and the fear, Remus smiled to see his baby boy, sweet and innocent, lying there next to his beautiful wife.
For a long while, Remus lay there, memorizing the mesmerizing details of the scene: Teddy's tiny hand curled around his mother's finger, Tonks's blue hair falling across her cheek, the teddy bear under her arm, the quilt Andromeda had given them for their wedding. He did not want to forget any of it.
Tonks opened her eyes.
"Hey," she said softly.
"Hey," he said, just as softly.
"Isn't he beautiful?" she said, reaching out and gently touching her baby's cheek.
His eyes settled on both of them: sleepy-eyed Tonks, peaceful baby Teddy.
"Beautiful," he whispered. "Mesmerizingly beautiful."
