Samantha Nixon looked up from the magazine she was trying to read although the words meant nothing and she couldn't concentrate, she heard the front door open and then shut with a bang.

"Sam?" Her boyfriend of nine months, Phil Hunter called out.

"In here." She replied, her voice not reflecting the anger she was really feeling inside.

Phil followed the sound of her voice and walked into the living room.

"Hey." He smiled, leaning over to kiss her on the lips, Sam turned her head and Phil looked at her with a hurt expression.

"I know." Sam said, closing her magazine and putting it down on the seat next to her.

"What?" Phil replied but he could guess what Sam was going to say next.

"I know about her." Sam said, her voice still calm. "How stupid do you think I am?" She snapped, suddenly losing her cool.

"I don't think you're stupid Sam..."

"Don't bother Phil! I've seen you do this so many times to other women why did I think this time would be different?"

"Because I love you..." Phil tried to speak again.

"Oh yeah of course you do." Sam's voice was dripping with sarcasm now. "That's why you had to go and sleep with another woman."

"I'm sorry."

"Save it Phil, you're pathetic. If she knew anything about you she wouldn't have gone anywhere near you in the first place." Sam regretted the words as soon as they came out but Phil had hurt her more and she was simply evening the score. It didn't make her feel any better though, in fact she felt worse.

"I deserve that." Phil admitted. "I never wanted to hurt you Sam it just..."

"Happened? Yeah, I know." She sighed. "With you it always just happens."

"I don't know what I can say to make it right."

"There's nothing you can do now Phil." Sam's voice was gentle and she tried to keep it even otherwise she would breakdown.

"Please don't say that!" Phil begged, his eyes beginning to glisten with tears at the thought of losing her. He knew he should have thought of that before but it was too late for 'what ifs'. "Can't we work it out?"

Sam shrugged and sighed. "I don't know, I really don't know. How can I ever trust you again?"

"I don't know." Phil looked at the floor. "I never wanted to be with anyone but you Sam, that's the truth and I don't want to lose you because of a stupid mistake."

"Is that all it was?" Sam asked. "A stupid mistake?"

"Of course, it meant nothing. You're the one I want not her."

"Do you really mean that?"

"Of course I do, I love you Sam and I felt nothing for her."

Sam tried her best to fight back her tears that were determined to fall.

"I love you too Phil but I don't think I could take it if you did this to me again."

"I won't." He assured her. "I won't."

They hugged, holding onto each other as if their lives depended on it, which in a way they did.

"Promise?" She asked.

"Promise." He replied, and this time he knew he would never break his promise.
