The Sweeter Things
Prologue:
Hermione stepped out onto the ice, sliding carefully out into the deep of the Lake. The ice was thicker in most places, and in others it seemed to shift under her weight, those spots she quickly moved away from. A chill ran through the air, freezing her muddy ringlets to the hood of her pea coat. It had been a harsh unforgiving winter, and at some point time began to stand still.
Seventh Year was a lonely and morbid one. With so many deaths in her class alone, Hermione felt abandoned and lost. She had grown so accustom to students walking in packs to class. What used to be a wave of undulating students now were two or three bobbing black cloaks in the desolate halls. It was as if a plague had struck down at Hogwarts, and she was just waiting for her timely demise.
She should have never come back. She should have left when Harry Potter asked her. She should have left when Ronald and Ginerva Weasley met at the white gates. She should have left when she had lost all hope. She should have left when she fell in love. She should have. But, God, how she just couldn't leave this place. She just couldn't leave her childhood, yet. It was selfish of her and she knew it.
As memories and thoughts passed by her mind, the ice began to crack at her feet, shattering her reverie and what felt like time-- finally. She fell back slowly as the ice seemingly tore away at the hinges. The water choked her, grasping its icy fingers around her delicate neck as she thrashed for release. The hole she had made was larger then she remembered and she couldn't find the edge with her roaming fingers.
Hermione Granger had slipped, and she couldn't remember how she had gotten there. How her hearts was being torn apart. How her mind was clouded with a false euphoria and empty memories. How she yearned for help for the first time in a long time.
