THE MOTHER TALK
Disclaimer: I don't own Twilight.
For those of you waiting for another chapter of "Young Love in Old – Fashioned America," don't worry. I haven't given up on it. I'm just working on some edits that are taking me away from writing more chapters.
In the meantime, this is a scene that I've wanted to see almost since it was mentioned in Breaking Dawn. I've come to the conclusion (as I often do), that if I want to see the scene, I need to write myself. I hope you enjoy it as well.
And as all my stories,
XXXXXXX means POV change
OOOOOO means time change
Renée couldn't believe she was actually okay with Bella getting married. She spent years telling Bella that teenage marriage was a huge mistake. There was a time where it would be almost easier to forgive Bella for using drugs than for getting married early. And now, she was okay with it. But Renée had some time to think after Bella and her…young man had come to visit. And she realized that Bella was a complete different person than she was. Furthermore, Bella had obviously found a nice boy that was just as committed. More to it than that, this…Edward seemed ready to take care of Bella. It would be nice for Bella to have someone like that, Renée admitted to herself. Bella spent most of her childhood taking care of her.
"So have you picked out a dress, yet?" Phil asked from his easy chair. "I know you'll want to look your best for Bella's wedding."
Renée shrugged. "Not yet, but there are a few different ones I'm looking at. There's a blue one, a light green, a dark green, an orange, and a purple. If I knew what Bella's colors were going to be, it might be easier to choose – "
Phil held up his hands. "Okay, that's fine. Just let me know when you've finally decided." With that, his attention returned to the TV. He'd been watching a lot of ESPN since he'd broken his leg a month ago. It was nice of him to ask about her dress when he obviously didn't care about that stuff. Maybe it was Phil's way of taking care of her. Renée wondered accepting Bella's upcoming marriage had anything to do with finding Phil. Okay, so she'd always told Bella she had a problem with teenage marriage, not marriage in general. But…Renée couldn't deny she liked having Phil around permanently. Maybe it made easier for her to see Bella with a…husband?
She sighed and thought about her dress again. She really did need to choose one soon. Maybe she could call…what were those people's name again? The Cullen's. Bella had said Edward's sister was planning the wedding, right? And didn't Bella give them their number, just in case Renée had any questions? Well, now she had a question!
She searched through the papers next to the phone. Where did it go? Did it fall on the floor? Was it behind the table? Renée searched for about twenty minutes for the number before she finally found it. It was tacked up on the refrigerator. She'd looked at it for a month and a half every time she got a soda, and she didn't remember that? She shook her head. While, no matter. At least she'd found the number.
Renée quickly dialed the number listed (including several area codes). "Hello, Cullen residence," said a warm, cheerful voice.
"Hello!" Renée replied. "I'm Bella's mother, Renée. I called because I was wondering about the wedding. Well, actually…the colors for the wedding, in particular. Bella said Edward's sister was planning it so…" Her voice trailed off as she finally ran out of breath.
"Hello, Renée, I'm Esme Cullen. Edward's mother. I think Alice is busy right now, but I would be happy to talk to you about the wedding." The woman's voice sounded very sincere. Renée decided she'd like to talk to her.
"Okay," Renée agreed. "So, as I was saying, what's the color theme for the wedding? I want to be able to choose the right color dress. I have several picked out you know." She giggled happily as she thought about the dresses.
"I think Alice has chosen purple and blue," Esme replied. "She's also decided to have it outside, so we can use some of our own flowers. I've been thinking about using white ones. Hopefully I can talk Alice into it." Esme's voice became more excited as she talked about the floral decorations.
Renée smiled. "That's good to know. I could wear the purple dress then. Or the blue one. I'll have to see which one Phil likes better. Of course he doesn't really care which dress I wear as long as I'm happy with it…"
Esme laughed warmly. Everything about this woman seemed warm, Renée noticed. Bella was lucky to be marrying into this family. They talked about the wedding for another ten minutes. Before they hung up Esme made sure to say, "Renée, anytime you want to talk again, feel free to call me. About the wedding, or about Bella and Edward, or anything else you might want to talk about."
Renée sighed happily. "I might do that, actually. I'm really…okay about Bella getting married. But I do feel a little…left out that it's so far away. I feel like…I'm not really a part of it." She couldn't believe she was saying this to a stranger, but this woman was easy to talk to.
"Then you must call me again!" Esme insisted. "I never want any of Bella's family to feel excluded from the wedding. Call me and I'll tell you all about it."
"Great," Renée agreed, hanging up.
XXXXXXXXXXXX
Esme sighed as she hung up her phone. It was too bad Bella had to lose her family eventually for the choice she was making. Especially considering her family seemed like nice people who actually cared about Bella. At least they got to see her happy with Edward first. And Esme intended to use that time to show Bella's family how much they all cared about her. Still, she felt sorry for Bella's mother. She was losing her daughter more fully than she even realized. That was one reason why she was happy to talk to Renée about the wedding, if that was what she wanted to do.
Still, unlike Edward and Rosalie, Esme didn't try to talk Bella out of her decision. In the first place, she was overjoyed that Edward had finally found a nice young woman to share his existence with. He'd been lonely for so long. In the second place, Esme understood Bella's desire, probably better than anyone else in their family. After all, Esme had met Carlisle when she was human as well. And if she'd been in a position to ask Carlisle to change her, she would have. Definitely.
So what did you think? This is the first time I've written a "canon" story for this series, so I really don't know how I did. Give me some honest reviews please.
