I love this song, its "Footprints in the Sand" by Leona Lewis, and it inspired this one-shot.

When a five year old Kakashi entered his fathers study to find that the once-hero had gutted himself on the floor, he was hit by the stark realization that he was the last of the Hatake's; through his shock it was days before he managed to cry. He believed that he was alone for a long time.

He constantly misunderstood his team's attempts to show him otherwise.

That's when I heard you say
His sensei's efforts to reach out and show the boy how to be child were met with scorn, Rin's attempts to show him that there were people who do care for him were met with contempt, and Obito's relentless pursuit to show his friend that there is more to being a genius than Kakashi thinks were met with anger and ridicule.

By the time the boy realizes it's too late, his sensei has given his life, Rin has succumbed and Obito has left him.

He finally understands the lessons that they were trying to impart. He counts them as his dearest friends, his precious people after they depart from life.

Obito isn't about to leave him alone so easily though, the gift of his eye will remain for all Kakashi's life, it takes him a while longer to realize that the boy remains by his side in other ways as well.

When he gets the chance to do it over he vows that his kids won't find it so difficult, and with the help of Kakashi's precious people they don't.
