I Know How You Feel

Hello fellow Layton fans. I'm sorry to say, I'm not feeling my best. The week before had been unkind and unjust to me. In laymans terms: Downright depressing. It's been one thing leading to another. So to begin this new week, I thought I'd pay a tribute to last week with a depressing fic. Yes, and before you assume it, NO NOBODY DIED IN MY LIFE.

I hope you enjoy my tiny oneshot. I might expand it a little if asked, but no promises. Enjoy.

Layton re-read the letter over and over again. It just couldn't be true. How could history repeat itself like this? Was this fate's cruel joke! Was his apprentice truly meant to walk in his footsteps? Long ago, he had lost Claire... and now...

Luke lost Arianna.

The Golden Garden didn't work: It only lengthend her time to live for three years. In the end, her illness prevailed, and it killed her.

Layton sighed. Luke had been distraight all morning, but wouldn't tell him why. Not that he could, with all his hiccuping and words mangled by tears. So Layton had done some snooping around. He found the letter outside his room door, as if he couldn't look at it anymore. He couldn't blame him. It was the last thing he would ever have of her.

He placed the letter on his desk. Now he felt guilty. This was a personal love letter. Arianna had confided so much in this letter. It tinged his checks just thinking about what it said.

"Oh Luke, my boy... If only I was a better teacher. I could tell you how to move on... but I haven't learned that lesson myself yet." He sighed.

Thinking for a moment, he opened his drawer and took out an old love letter he held onto. It was quite personal to him, but it would only be fair.

Luke sniffled, staring out into the night sky. "I'm sorry Arianna. I should have been with you more." He leaned out the window, eyes closed. He could feel the wind whip at his tear stained cheeks. It was like she was carressing him from the afterlife.

His eyes widened when he felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked up, seeing his mentor. "P-Professor!" He quickly rubbed his eyes. "I-I-I-I'm sorry-"

Layton bent down and hugged him. "Don't apologize. I was the same when Claire died."

Luke relaxed in his hold. "You saw the letter then?" There was a twinge of embaressment in his tone, and Layton knew why.

"Yes, and to be fair, here's something Claire gave to me." He handed to him.

Luke looked at it and felt his cheeks go red. "A-ah... d-don't tell anyone, please?"

Layton winked, tipping his hat. "Your secret is safe with me." He hugged him again. "I know it hurts now, but I can promise you, time heals all wounds. They may scar, but the pain wont last forever."

Luke sniffled even more. New tears threatened to spill. "Th-the funeral is... t-t-tomorrow..." His form shaked.

Layton rubbed his back soothingly. "It's alright. Just let it all out."

The apprentice couldn't hold it in much longer. He sank to his knees and cried. He cried and cried and cried, until he cried himself to sleep.

Layton didn't leave the room that night. He knew what Luke was going through, and being alone was the worst thing. He would be there for all the emotional baggage.

Because he knew all to well, what it felt like to lose someone you loved more than life itself.

Oh well. We've all had our fair share of lifes cruelty. I hope to get myself out of this rut, and update with an awesome fic! Review if you wish. I admit, I don't care much for this peice of garbage.
