"Have you ever been married?"

"No, never married. Too choosy."

It was a path her thoughts shouldn't be taking. It was too tense of a mission to be distracted. Still Jane couldn't help but think of Kurt's earlier revelation. Was it just her or did he seem to be enjoying playing the part of a jealous husband? Jane glanced down at the wedding ring. She tried not to think of what had been taken from her.

"What the hell was that about?"

"You're my wife."

Would she have a husband and children by now if her life had gone the normal path? Would they be Kurt's children? Slipping away from Kurt for a moment Jane stepped out onto the balcony. She needed some fresh air so she could clear her head and refocus. Why did Kurt have to look so damn good in a tux?

"I feel ridiculous in this dress."

"That's not the word I'd use."

This was a scenario. They were playing a part. Jane had to keep that in mind. Though Jane couldn't forget the look in Kurt's eyes when she'd shown up in the dress. If Jane was truthful with herself that look he'd given her had made her feel good; really good. Especially since it had come from him and not any other man.

"...I think I was engaged."

Jane thought of the man with the tree tattoo. Not for the first time she wondered who he was. What had she been doing before her memory was wiped?

"You alright?"Kurt asked quietly as he came to stand next to her.

Jane couldn't help but lean into his touch as he placed an arm around her waist. It felt so natural, so normal to be in his arms.

"Yeah, just needed some fresh air."Jane replied as she cleared her throat and turned away from the water.

Jane could tell he didn't buy her answer but he didn't press.

"You deserve to be taken to fancy places like this."Kurt said quietly.

"I think I'm more a pizza and wine kind of girl."Jane replied with a smile.

Noticing his tie was a bit crooked Jane reached up and straightened it. For a split second Jane thought Kurt was going to kiss her. The heat in his eyes told her more than words ever could. Jane let her hands linger on his tie a second longer than necessary. Finally Kurt broke their gaze and turned Jane back toward the party.

"We should keep looking for the other buyer."Kurt stated quietly.

Jane noticed his arm didn't leave her waist once they cleared the doorway and stepped back inside. She didn't mind. As her eyes scanned the crowd for the other buyer Jane felt her thoughts drift once more to roads not taken. Before she could stop it images of Kurt with an infant in his arms flashed through her thoughts. Then one of him with a young boy with dark hair.

She forcefully shoved the images aside. There was nothing to be gained by dwelling on what might have been. Still a voice whispered; what if what might have been still could be? Stepping away from Kurt Jane reached for him and linked their hands. She smiled feeling him intertwine their fingers. Despite everything she'd lost Jane was grateful to have Kurt Weller back in her life. It didn't make up for what was taken from her; from them but it was a beginning.
