Chapter Two

we last left Olive Snook in her apartment with Digby contemplating what she really wanted, and the pie maker was contemplating how to break up with Chuck

Olive Snook lay on the bed staring toward the ceiling thinking of what her life would be like with the pie maker. Digby, the faithful dog, was lying next to Olive nudging her hand with his cold wet nose.

"Digby," Olive turned to face her only friend who licked her face gleefully, "I don't know what I want. I feel like I messed up, but I haven't even done anything yet!"

Olive sat up startled by the sharp four knocks at her front door. She slowly walked toward the peep hole, grabbed her stool, stood up and saw the pie maker staring toward the door with great anticipation. Slowly Olive turned the knob but did not unlock the safety chain so that the door would only open a couple of inches, not enough for the pie maker to fit through.

"Yes," Olive said solemnly, "I'll come back to work in the morning, I just need a little Olive time." She felt like smacking herself for using the term "Olive Time," but kept the same solemn expression.

"Olive, can we just talk?" the pie maker asked quietly. "No we cannot," Olive shot back, "you and I are done talking," Olive paused seeing the sad look on the pie maker's face, "at least for a little while," she added quickly. "But I need to talk to you. I don't think it can wait I thi," he was cut off by Olive's tender voice, "can it wait until morning?" she asked in an unsure way, "Yes, yes it can." The pie maker saw this as an opportunity to think of a way to get chuck out of the picture, "I'll be here first thing in the morning, and maybe this time the door will open all the way?" the pie maker teased. Olive giggled and that giggle shot sparks up the pie maker's spine. "Yes, I think I can manage that. Good night." And then ever so slowly, Olive Snook closed the door on the pie maker. He waited until it was shut all the way, then turned and entered his own apartment.

THE NEXT MORNING

Ned awoke to silence. He looked at the clock, "5:30 that gives me an hour before I have to go to work, which gives me an hour to talk to Olive." He smiled at the thought of what Olive might be doing, when in reality she was still asleep. He put on a simple white shirt and some nice pants and walked out into the kitchen.

"Morning Digby!" he smiled as he walked toward the coffee pot, "Do you think Olive will want some coffee?" he asked the tired dog, "well I'll make some anyway."

As the pie maker made Olive Snook her morning coffee with love, Olive woke up to her awful alarm ringing in her ears.

"Another morning, another challenge," she thought to herself as she slammed her small hand on her horse jockey alarm clock. She quickly, and without thinking, put on her work uniform and started to put on her makeup. When she was all ready for work, she started toward the door. Four quick knocks came from the other side. Olive suddenly remembered that she had told Ned she would talk to him in the morning. She quickly scampered around the apartment picking up trash and making sure everything looked presentable. Another four knocks came, but just as the final knock was about to hit the door Olive swung it open and smiled.

"Morning!" she said cheerily. "Good morning!" Ned said smiling, "I brought you coffee. I wasn't sure if you liked this flavor but I just thought maybe you could give it a try." He looked into Olive's eyes and this time Olive didn't look away. "Come in," she said, "We can talk on the couch." The pie maker walked in and sat on the fluffy couch. Olive shut the door and turned to face the man she now knew she loved.

She realized she had been waiting for this moment as long as she knew the pie maker.
