Title: A Soldier in Peace Author: Sphynx Pairings: 11xS (but is it really that important?) Rating: PG Notes: I'm channeling Une *shudders*. But that's ok, because Une was never meant to be one of the bad guys. And yes, the title is very important.

A Soldier in Peace

She sat there, staring out the window. She wasn't thinking about anything in particular. It had been a year since the war. And it was snowing again. The flakes falling softly, bringing hope of new peace, a cleansing for the world of the brutalities of the past. It was on the thought of peace that she dwelled, if anything. Where was her place in this world? She had been trained to fight, and now she shuffled papers all day. Lady Une watched the snow fall, thinking on the past year, and what it had meant to her.

Sally watched her friend, her love from the doorway. Even in repose, Une's posture seemed harsh, a product of many years in the military. Sally knew what was on Une's mind, it was the same thing that was on every former soldier's mind that night, most likely. Where was the need for soldiers in a world that strove for peace?

Everything that they fought for had been achieved. For now. And so what was their purpose in life? Some soldiers knew nothing else. If they weren't lucky enough to find the Preventers, or be found, then what did they do? They needed work they could do. And some of them knew nothing but war, nothing but fighting.

She and Une were not like that, not entirely. Sally had her medicine. Une had her brilliant mind. But they both ended up with the Preventers. They had created the organization, worked for its survival. It was something that was needed, something to protect the peace so many people had died for. That Treize had died for. Sally knew Une thought of him this night, she could see it in Une's face.

But Sally never knew that Une thought of her, and her hard work to not only heal the bodies of her patients, but their souls as well. And Une did think of her. She thought of why she continued to work to keep the peace she had labored to prevent during the war. Sally was one reason. If not for human ties, simple bonds of love and compassion that bound people to each other, what was there to lose? And Une had learned to fight for Sally. Because she loved her, more than she had ever loved Treize. Sally was a person, while Treize was only an ideal. An ideal Une still held dear to.

Treize's belief that every life is important and beautiful, that nothing could replace a person. That was what drove Une to believe in the people. And Sally had shown her how to find the soul in every person. Une turned, aware of Sally's presence in the doorway, and smiled. Peace had been found, and she would fight to maintain it. But she hoped she didn't have to. Her life as a soldier was over.
